William Janowetch Obituary

At noon on Thursday, December 5, 2013, Bill's soul left this world and is now at eternal peace. His family was with him as he died where he was born and lived, on the piece of land he called home, in the house he built and dearly loved. Bill died as he lived-with humor and dignity. He was a man who took pleasure in simple things…mowing the lawn, snowblowing the driveway, watching court tv, polka and steel drum music, puttering around in the garage and making things such as lawn deer from all the bits and pieces he loved to save (Hey! I could use that for something!) He loved soda and sweets (2 for a nickel crap wrapped up) and he especially loved to sit on the porch in the sun and wave to all the passing neighbors. Bill was always quick with a joke, no matter the subject. He never met a stranger and was a friend to all. He had a soft spot for animals, especially dogs, and is now and forever with his best buddies Lucky, Tootie and Chewy. Bill was born on September 7, 1925. He was a veteran of World War II, serving with the US Navy from November 1943 to April 1946. He saw duty with the Amphibious forces in the Pacific Theatre and was active in the liberation of the Philippines. He was employed by the Royal Typewriter Company for six years prior to joining the Bloomfield Post Office in October 1955. He became Bloomfield's very first foot letter carrier in December 1955. He held supervisory positions from February 1962 until he retired in April 1983 as Superintendent of Postal Operations. He was also employed by Darworth Company, a division of Ensign Bickford, from 1985 to 1991. Bill was active in the National Association of Postal Supervisors, serving as Vice President and Legislative Chairman of the CT branch, and as treasurer of the Hartford branch. He was past treasurer and a member of the Board of Directors of the Bloomfield Rotary Club. He was an active member of Our Lady of the Assumption Church, Christ the King Church, and Sacred Heart Church. Bill was the first president of the Parish Council of Our Lady of the Assumption and was involved in its relocation and renovation from Windsor to Bloomfield in 1983. He was also a volunteer for Meals on Wheels for many years. Bill leaves his best friend and wife of 64 years, Beverly (Jacobsen); his son Stephen of Spring, TX; his three daughters and their husbands, Debra and Douglas Burhoe of West Suffield, Susan and Malcolm DeBay of East Granby, Karen and Steven Moore of Granby; his six grandchildren, Carrie West and her husband Chris of CA, Charles Burhoe and his wife Jodie of Simsbury, Edward DeBay and Madeline DeBay, both of East Granby, Evan Moore and Brendan Moore, both of Granby; and his three great-grandchildren, Delilah Askegreen West, and Mason and Charlotte Burhoe. He also leaves his sister-in-law and brother-in-law, Don and Dorothy Strickland of Plainville, and many nieces and nephews. Bill was predeceased by his parents Joseph and Mary Janowitch, and his brother Edward. The family of Bill would like to say a special thank you to the staff of McLeans Hospice and the Hartford Hospital Senior Health Services at Duncaster, and to all the neighbors and friends who stopped by the house to offer a helping hand and words of comfort. A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 10 AM Thursday, December 12 at Sacred Heart Church, 26 Wintonbury Ave Bloomfield followed by burial with military honors in Mount St. Benedict Cemetery, Bloomfield. The family will receive friends on Wednesday, December 11 from 4 PM to 7 PM at the Carmon Windsor Funeral Home, 807 Bloomfield Ave Windsor. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to Animal Friends of CT, PO Box 370306, West Hartford, CT 06137-0306. "You're in the arms of the angels…may you find some comfort there." Dear Debbie,

I'm so sorry for the loss of your Dad. There's always a very special bond between dads and their little girls.

An Old Irish Blessing

May the road rise up to meet you.
May the wind always be at your back.
May the sun shine warm upon your face,
and rains fall soft upon your fields.
And until we meet again,
May God hold you in the palm of His hand.

Much love to you and your family!!

Bev, Steve & family - Dennis and I are so sorry to hear about Bill's death. He was a great man and I always enjoyed talking to him although his jokes sometimes went over my head. He loved to get me flustered and he found that easy to do. When I picture him it is with a wide smile and wise look. The Bloomfield Community has lost a great member. Our thoughts and prayers are with you. If you need anything, you know where we are.
