William Molloy Obituary

William D. Molloy, 93, husband, father, grandfather, great grandfather, and funeral director died Friday, November 29, 2013, at St. Francis Hospital. He was the husband of the late Mary Marie Bates Molloy, and a man of deep faith and fidelity. Born in Syracuse, NY, on December 12, 1919, he was the son of the late William P. and Katherine (Daly) Molloy. Bill was a graduate of Hall High School (where he was known as Mike). He played tennis and hockey, captaining his high school teams.. He attended Holy Cross College in Worcester, MA, and was drafted for service in WW II late in his senior year. He served with the 453rd Bomb Group in England. Returning from overseas, he completed his studies at Cincinnati College and became licensed in Connecticut. Bill purchased the family funeral home and moved the business to West Hartford in 1956, semi-retiring in 1983, and "really retiring" in 1993, even then "directing" from his summer home at Black Point Beach Club in Niantic, CT and his winter home in Tucson, AZ. For many years he was active in his parish community, working with several catholic organizations and coaching CYO baseball for St. Thomas the Apostle School during the 1960's. He was a tennis player, gardener, skier, golfer, and builder of doll houses and their furnishings. He is survived by his seven children and their families: Sarah Riley and her husband Bill of Bloomfield, their daughter Maura and son Dan and his wife Melissa; Randy and his wife Eileen of West Hartford, their children W. Christopher and his wife Gina, Jennifer Dinardo and her husband Chris; John and his daughter Kerry of Boston, MA; Patricia Teich and her husband Mark of West Hartford, and their sons Matt and his wife Nicole and Greg; Michael Molloy of Madison, Jane Petroski and her husband Larry of Oxford and their children Carol and Paul; Mark and Jean Molloy of West Hartford and their daughters Margaret and Katherine. Also surviving him are his nine great grandchildren, his brother Dr. Robert Molloy and his wife Lorraine of Harwich, MA and his sister Helen Molloy of Bloomfield, and many nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by a close cousin, Jane, who was like a sister to him. Bill's family would like to thank the staffs at St. Mary Home and St. Francis Hospital for their attention and care. Calling hours will be Monday, (Dec. 2) from 3:00 p.m.- 7:00 p.m. at the Molloy Funeral Home 906 Farmington Ave. West Hartford, CT . Friends are invited to join Bill's family at the celebration of his Mass of Christian Burial at 11 a.m. in St. Thomas the Apostle Church 872 Farmington Ave. West Hartford on Tuesday, (Dec. 3). Burial will follow in Fairview Cemetery, West Hartford. Donations in his memory may be made to St. Thomas the Apostle School, 25 Dover Rd. W. On behalf of President/Chief Administrator David Eustis and the entire Northwest Catholic High School community, I offer my deepest sympathy on the passing of William Molloy.

Because his children, Randy Molloy '65, Patricia Molloy Teich '70, Michael Molloy '73 and Mark Molloy '77; his daughter-in-law Jean Donnelly Molly '78; and his grandchildren, Maura Riley '85, Daniel Riley '86, Christopher Molloy '95, Jennifer Molloy Dinardo '98, Margaret Molloy '07 and Katherine Molloy '11, are cherished members of our school family, we feel that William was, too, and we mourn his death along with all those who love him.

Please know that we are holding all of William's family very close to our hearts this week, and that we will include him on the prayer list at our next school-wide Mass. We are very sorry for your loss.

to Sarah, Randy and all the Molloys, my deepest sympathy for the loss of your Dad. I will remember him where he was the happiest-sitting on the bench at South beach and watching all the kids at play. He always had a kind word and asked about my family whenever I saw him. He will be truly missed.

Randy and family,
Bill helped our family in times of need with great compassion as has Randy who has followed in his footsteps. But mostly I remember Bill from times at the "little beach" when all the adults got together and enjoyed his great humor. Both your parents were wonderful people and I hope all your good memories help you through this difficult time.

Sarah, Bill, Randy, Eileen, John, Michael, Janie, Larry, Mark, Jean Marie, and all of your children: I will truly miss being with you today as you celebrate Uncle Bill's long and happy life. I will always cherish the time he and I left a BBQ at Cape Cod, at his insistence, because we just had too much red wine and not enough white! Along the way, I was treated to lots of stories of his war service -- most of them revolving around his wooing of Mary Marie -- now there was a legendary love. Charlie and I have you all in our thoughts and prayers today and tomorrow, and hope that you find comfort in all the stories of Bill and Mary Marie which you will be sharing over these next few days. To all the Molloys, especially Mark, Jean, Margaret, and Katherine: We are so sorry about the loss of your beloved father and grandfather, who simply seemed like an institution for all of us! What a fine, long life he had -- yet it can also feel like it's never long enough. Please know that we are holding you close in thought and prayer this week.

To Mark and Jean, Randy, Chris and the entire family of Bill Molloy,
Please accept our deepest sympathies on the passing of Bill. You selected the perfect picture of Bill that captures how we remember him at the Church of Saint Thomas the Apostle. Based on your summary of his life he had a very full life and touched many people. Know that our Prayers are with Bill and all of you.
