Obituary Condolences


NORTHUP, Arvin Hume Arvin Hume Northup, 90, of Kensington, died peacefully on Sunday, (July 2, 2006) at Veterans' Hospital in Rocky Hill following a long illness. Born in New Orleans, LA, March 1, 1916, he was the son of the late Ruth (Wenzel) and Hume Harrison Northup. Growing up on Long Island, he attended PS 99, later graduating from Fortier High School (New Orleans) and Louisiana State University (Baton Rouge) with a B.S. in Engineering. He served in the ROTC, Army Infantry and Army Air Corps from 1940 to 1946, earning his wings as a glider pilot in 1943 and the rank of First Lieutenant. He lived for over 50 years in Bucks County and Chester County, PA. Until his retirement in 1991, he was Hospital Administrator at the A.I. DuPont Children's Hospital and Executive Director of the Nemours Free Clinic in Wilmington, DE. Previously, he was Senior Contracts Administrator at Thiokol Chemical Corporation in Elkton, MD, where he was heavily involved in the Apollo Space missions. He is survived by his beloved wife of 65 years, Ellen (Stover) Northup; his daughter and son-in-law, Deborah (Northup) and Richard Leng, all of Kensington, along with his grandchildren Hillary (Leng) Schnabel of Cromwell and David Dennison Leng at Brooklyn, NY. He is also survived by a favorite cousin and his wife, William and Dorothy Sweet of Coatesville, PA. Arvin was Justice of the Peace in Penn Township, PA, and is remembered for his volunteer service with The Chester County American Cancer Society, the Doylestown and Bryn Mawr Hospitals. An experienced horseman and golfer, he excelled at all sports. His Family is grateful to the staff at the Veterans' Hospital for the wonderful, loving care he received during his time there. Funeral services will be held Friday, July 7th at 10 a.m. at Giuliano Sagarino Funeral Home at BROOKLAWN, 511 Brook Street, Rocky Hill. Internment will follow in Col. Gates Cemetery with full military honors, Rocky Hill. Calling hours are Thursday from 9-10 a.m. at the funeral home.
