KOSKI, Brian L.
With his family at his side, Brian Leonard Koski, 64, passed away at home on May 27, 2013. He was a resident of Highland Park, Pittsburgh, PA for the past 17 years. Brian leaves behind his lifelong friend and beloved wife of 22 years, Allyson Holtz; cherished children Jude Koski (Sanjai Moses) of San Francisco and Jake Koski (Kathryn Armstrong) and adored granddaughter, Lia Armstrong Koski of New Haven, CT. The oldest son of the late Emil "Lee" and Jeannette (Lariviere) Koski, Brian was predeceased by brothers David and Robert and granddaughter, Eliza Jude Koski. Born in Camp Hill, PA on July 11, 1948, Brian grew up in Hartford, CT graduating from the Noah Webster School and Hartford Public High School. He attended Bradley University, Peoria, IL. A lifelong athlete - swimmer, soccer player, golfer, marathoner and triathlete - a summer lifeguard position connected Brian to the American Red Cross and was the beginning of a 35- year career in healthcare and Blood Banking. Working with multi-national corporations - AT&T, Johnson and Johnson, United Technologies (Pratt and Whitney), and Hamilton Standard, Brian designed systems, for increased corporate donation programs, that became standards for the blood banking industry. He spent over 17 years with the American Red Cross Blood Services (Connecticut and Wisconsin). Other positions included Florida's Blood Centers, Regional Administrative Director; Virginia Blood Services; Senior Vice President, Operations; Community Blood Centers of South Florida, Chief Operating Officer; Pittsburgh's Central Blood Bank, Vice President for Corporate Development. More recently Brian served as Executive Director of Operation Valor Arts, a 501c3 non-profit organization assisting veterans with education and training through the design and construction of public art. Our family will cherish memories of the rounds of golf Brian played with his parents and son, Jake; his dedication to coaching Jude's and Jake's soccer teams; his love of photography and delight that his granddaughter is following in his footsteps and the creative talents he applied to his woodworking. Buck and Pearl are still waiting for their next walk on the park trails with "Pop". May his memory be a source of strength and a blessing.
Memorial services in Hartford and Pittsburgh are planned for later in the summer. In lieu of flowers, please make a donation in Brian's name to Operation Valor Arts: a Veterans' Initiative, P.O. Box 5224, Pittsburgh, PA 15206.

Allyson, April and Jake:
I only just learned of Brian's passing, what a shock and what a loss! I first met Brian after I'd heard about his accomplishments in Madison and was so pleased we were able to recruit him to join us in Providence. I will always credit Brian for turning blood donor recruitment around in Rhode Island and making it self-sufficient in its blood needs. More importantly, however, I always enjoyed and cherished Brian's friendship and I enjoyed whenever we ran into one another over the past two decades. For me his, smile and positive attitude will never fade and while he will be missed, his mark will remain.....Godspeed in your new life!

Thank you Brian for being our endorser of backyard exploration and adventure for all seasons. You enhanced our imaginations with gardens, forts, snowmen, piles of autumn leaves to dive into, tools& supplies for the playhouse (aka headquarters). Thank you for being present and participating in Jude & Jakes childhoods so their friends invited to sleep overs could live vicariously through them when we didn't have Dads at home of our own. Thank you Brian Koski , keep looking out for us and I'll see you in the seasons.

I consider myself fortunate to have known Brian even if it was for a very short time. I was fortunate to know Brian for about 4 years. His personality is contagious and he is truly a GOOD person. I can honestly say now Brian I will do what I can to "keep the whale turning around even if it is low tide" and remembering your encouragement all the while. "good morning Brian!!"

Allyson, I know that Brian would be proud of us as we continue to keep the yards looking beautiful and Pearl & Buck entertained! Brian's legacy will live on through Operation Valor Arts and in so many other ways. I'll never forget how much I learned from working with him; his assistance with everything from removing my stained glass window for repair and assembling one of my art pieces in 2010 to lending me tools when I needed them was something that I'll always be grateful for.

That Brian was able to make a third Tampa Spring baseball trip in March meant the world to him and the "boys." And, despite a harsh Hartford winter, he and Allyson cared for Ma Mere with hospice at home, taking the time to listen to jazz float in the Hartford Public Library atrium at the Baby Grand Jazz series. Brian swam at the JCC, walked his dog children, reconnected with friends and family and did everything he could to conquer cancer. We'll cherish the good moments.
