It was very shocking to hear of Danny's passing. I lived in Hartford for a short time in the late 80's, knew no one, but was introduced to Danny by a mutual friend. I then knew everyone...he was full of life, a friend to all. The world needs more like him. He will be missed.
September 22, 2009
I remember when he was little Danny. The little boy who lived on Mountain Street in Hartford. He would come into my back hall looking to play with my son Brad. He was always polite and a little shy. I can
still see him standing there looking up at me. Memory Eternal

I was so surprise to hear about the passing of Dan. I have known him for a long time. Everytime I went to city hall he would give me a hug. He used to help out with our baseball league. He was a good and dear friend. I'm total shock that he is gone. Sorry I miss his funeral for I would of been there for him. Just founded out today Sept. 21st. He is such a young guy and with a full life ahead of him. Karin Reed

Music, good whiskey,Northern Ireland engaged us many a night - he could hold court with Kings and paupers. May he rest in peace. I offer my sincere condolences to Dans family and friends from all over the world.I am over 3000 miles away but even at that,Dan made an impression on my life. Dan came into my life in the summer of 2007.I was one of five students from New Ross,Ireland (Hartford CT sister town) to study and live with host families in Hartford for the summer.I participated in a cultural programme at the University of Hartford to compare and contrast America to Ireland.Dan really went out of his way for us,without him the programme would not have been possible. He was an extremely proud Irishman. From the word go he made an instant impression on the five of us.We all were touched by his selflessness, generosity and free spirit. He always had a joke or funny story and his smile could luminate a room instantly. He took it on himself to show us around and to make us feel like we were at home, even giving us the tour of his offices. He arranged for us to meet Mayor Perez and often picked us up from school and brought us on trips or to cookouts. He travelled to New Ross when we were in Hartford and personally went out of his way to give messages from America to our parents. He has many good friends in New Ross that are trully heartbroken that will remember Dan with great fondness. He really became a Rossonian himself and he was Chairperson of the Hartford/New Ross sister commitee and visited our town regularly. He always enquired about the five of us and never forgot us,even asking my sister we were doing when they encountered by chance. He was one of a kind and will be sadly missed by New Ross.Rest in Peace Dan.Ar dheis Dé go raibh a anam

From one of the many families in the "Foster Heights" era, Dan will be truly missed. Growing up in a time that playing ball all day at the park was the norm, I had the honor of saying Dan was my friend. As I quite often still drive by Danny’s home on Mountain Street to get to my moms , I’m constantly reminded on all the good times we had as younger kids. These memories will never go away and will always hold a special place in my heart.
Going to the town hall on a regular basis, I would run into Dan quite often. No matter what he was doing, he would always take the time to stop and talk to me. After asking each other about our families, the topic would quickly change to the “Old Days”. He would remind me of all the good times we had as kids and would tell anyone that happen to be in his office at that time about how great the "Foster Heights" neighborhood was. It seemed every time we would talk about those younger days, we magically became better and better athletes. Dan was a proud man in anything he did and would never be too busy to stop and talk for a few minutes. Dan would have a story for every picture in his office and have a picture for story he told. Leaving his office was like leaving Fenway or the Giants Stadium. Most of all I will miss his great smile.
May god bless the entire Carey family and may Dan's accomplishments in life last forever in all our hearts

My heartfelt and sincere condolences to the family and friends of Dan. We were colleagues through the Town Clerks' Association and somewhere along the line became friends. I offer my most sincere condolences to Dan's family and friends. Dan touched my life in a very positive way in the summer of 2007 when he helped arrange for me and four other high school students from New Ross, Ireland, the sister city of Hartford, CT, to live and study in Hartford so that the links between the towns could be better established and to enable us young Irish teenagers to experience American life and culture. I will never forget his kindness, generosity, his sense of humour and his endearing personailty. He had many friends here in New Ross and he will always be fondly remembered as a kind-hearted and fun-loving man who cared deeply for Ireland and New Ross and for helping to foster the links between our two cities. May he rest in peace.

I'm Glad I Touched Shoulders with You.--There's a Comforting Thought at the close of day. That sort of grips hold of my crusty old heart, and bits it merry and glad.It gets in my souland it drives out the blues,It is a sweet memory that chants the refrain. I'm Glad I touched shoulders with you. For the peace I must fill. For the peace I know I must fill.I am thankful for sorrows, I'll meet with a grin, what fortunes may send good or ill. I may not have wealth I may not be great. But I know I must be true, For I have my life that courage you gave us all. When I once touched shoulders with you.

My sincerest condolences to the Carey family .
Like so many of his friends, I have a host of fond memories of “Danny Boy”. I had the good fortune of working with Dan at City Hall during my tenure as Finance Director, when he took over as a very “green’” Town and City Clerk in 1993. He diligently learned all the intricacies required of the office and within a short time was acknowledged for his expertise by the Statewide town clerk community. As Clerk, he was charged with ”Keeper of the City Seal” a responsibility he proudly and dutifully upheld. He was keenly interested in the history of the magnificent “Municipal Building” and one was lucky to get a personal tour from Dan. Despite the turmoil of City Hall over the years, the Hartford Clerk’s office, under Dan, always had a well deserved reputation for responsiveness, professionalism and customer service. When I departed City Hall in 1997, I received a wonderful note from Dan along with a fine bottle of Jameson; for me, a cherished memory.
Outside City Hall, Dan’s energy was focused on his love for his Irish heritage, the Red Sox, Huskies and golf. Being a friend to Dan was an honor but it also got you on the “A” list: “A” stood for “Attendance” required at his never ending fundraisers for some Irish cause. We all knew the drill: the quick call would come in from Dan (on just a day’s notice) “$5 bucks at The Maple tomorrow nite, be there!” and sure enough, despite the short notice and it being his second fundraiser that month, we would in fact, be there. His wide circle of friends always ensured a success to witness Dan running the raffles which were renowned for his rapid fire quips on the donated items and zingers to the winners. He loved his South end roots, its restaurants and bars like The Maple, Mike’s Arena, First and Last Tavern and the Nutshell. All of us enjoyed watching games at one of these pubs on cold, grey Sunday afternoons with Dan, his laughter and loud voice resonating over the crowd.
Dan truly enjoyed golf and his beloved “Goody Gardens”; from this great game he applied, in both his personal and professional life, its three values: “etiquette, honesty and respect’.
“Oh Danny boy, the pipes, the pipes are calling
From glen to glen, and down the mountain side
The summer's gone, and all the flowers falling
'Tis you, 'tis you must go and I must bide”.

Danny, I will never forget the evening that we met. You walked into the room and promptly owned it. Our lovely mutual friend introduced us and our friendship was born so easily that I was confident we’d somehow known each other before. I so treasure the times we shared and the interesting things you told me – especially about meeting Youk and holding the trophy. So impressive! Was there ever any doubt you were Dan the Man? You were remarkably kind and unfailingly fair to everyone. You were the most fun friend, entertaining and witty, full of shenanigans. You put your mark on my heart forever. Thank you for being there when I needed you. I shall miss you, larger than life, the man about town, everyone’s friend. Rest in peace.

Billy & family,
Words can never express our sympathies to you during this time. Danny was always so special to us.
From the day John & I got engaged, he would ask if he was going to be invited to our wedding....actually, he'd ask MULTIPLE times each time we saw him. We gave him a bit of a hard time..."Well, Dan, we don't know. We may need to cut the guest list back a bit". I'll never forget his puppy dog face saying "Really? I'm not on the short list?" Of course he was ALWAYS on the short list and we would never have had it any other way. What would our wedding have been without Dan Carey??
We love you, Danny. Rest in peace dear friend. Give our love to Big Mike & Mayor Mike. The world won't be the same without all of you, but you are forever in our hearts.
P.S. You will always be on our short list.

Those of us from the Class of '76 that so proudly proclaimed our unique "forever together" status, whether it was an event, or a golf tournament have Danny Carey to thank for the glue that held it together for 33 years. The ever present smile, the jovial slap on the back, and the individualized attention we each received from him or our own lifes will forever be blessed with his memory. Moments will be etched, I'm sure in all our minds for life: his athletic talents that contributed to the 76' dominance; his popularity and good natured sense of humor; his irish heritage and adherence to its' proclaimation. Danny was a special guy. To his family and friends, heartfelt condolences. A gem has been dimmed, but it will burn bright in our hearts forever.

Dear Dan:
It was one of the saddest days of my life getting a tear filled message from your boy Tommy that you had passed away. Many of the boys from the Class of 76 (Tommy, Mac, Fitz, Turk, Kott, Buddy, Galinsky, Dell, Bruno, Wayne, Buzz, Callis, Bunzo, “D”, M. O’Keefe, Waters, Bedula and Johnny P.) got together to celebrate your life on Friday at the Sidewalk Café.
We all expected you to walk through the door at any time with your round red face and your devilish smile, stopping to pull up your pants, flex your muscles, put your drink next to your heart and let out a mischievous laugh. There is nothing I wouldn’t give to see it one more time.
I have had lots of time to think since I heard the terrible news about how you have touched my life, my family’s life (my kids refer to you as uncle Danny) and the lives of so many others.
I always enjoyed attending various functions with you and watch you work the room. You would start at one end and I don’t think there was a person you didn’t know. If there was someone you didn’t know, you would introduce yourself –“Hi, my name is Dan Carey, City Clerk of Hartford.”. You even caught me doing it a couple of times and we would laugh about it.
Thank you Dan for being a part of our lives and for giving us so many smiles and happy times, we will miss you dearly.
Until the next time we meet, Love ya Dude!
