LOUGHLIN, Edmund

Mr. Edmund Frederick Loughlin 87, of Seymour, CT, beloved husband of the late Grace Birmingham Loughlin, passed away peacefully at home on Saturday, (July 23, 2011.) Born Aug. 18, 1923 in Cambridge, MA, he was the son of the late Margaret and John Loughlin, the last of eight children. Raised in Cambridge, he enlisted in the U.S. Army Air Corps in 1942 and flew fifty two missions as a radio operator and gunner in a B-17 in Africa, Italy and Germany during World War II. After the War, he returned to Cambridge and enrolled at Boston University, graduating with a B.S. and Master's Degrees in Education. His first teaching position was in Canaan, CT. In 1948, he moved to Greenwich, CT school system where he taught for five years, becoming a principal of New Lebanon School in 1953. Ed and Grace moved to Stamford, where they raised their four children. Ed served Greenwich as principal for 27 years, then became the system's Reading and Arts Consultant in 1979. He retired in 1980, and shortly after Ed and Grace moved to Beverly, MA where they lived until Grace's death in 2000. After retirement, Ed launched his second career as a professional actor. A veteran of many community theater projects since the early 1950's, Ed eagerly pursued - and won - professional jobs in theater, film and TV as well as print, radio and TV advertising. For several years, Ed was a regular company member in the Darien Dinner Theater and the Gloucester Stage Company. Ed was a proud member of the Screen Actors Guild and Actors' Equity. After Grace's death, Ed moved to Semour, CT, where he was living with beloved son James when he passed. Ed will be lovingly remember by his children and family: daughter Jean and her husband, Donald Mazzola of Torrington, CT, and their children, Amy, Robert and Kelly, son James of Seymour, CT, and children Sean, Katherine and Kyle, daughter Beth and her husband, Thomas Bradley of Canton, CT and their children, Richard and Jane, and daughter, Ellen and her husband, Tom Pincus of Shoreline, WA and their children, Justin and Allison. He also leaves his beloved sister, Veronica Loughlin of Waltham, MA and many dear and special friends.
His funeral Mass will be held at St. Mary Star of the Sea Church, 253 Cabot St., Beverly, MA, Thursday, July 28 at 11 a.m. Relatives and friends are invited to attend. Visiting hour will be held prior to the Mass on Thursday morning from 9 to 10:30 a.m. Burial in Central Cemetery, Beverly, MA. In lieu of flowers, expressions of sympathy may be made in Ed's memory to the , 5 Brookside Dr., PO Box 5022, Wallingford, CT 06492.
