Rev. Eugene F. Mitchell, 76, of Windsor, beloved husband of Eileen (Haas) Mitchell and Lutheran Pastor for 49 years, passed away on Thursday (October 4, 2012). Born in Boston, MA, son of the late Ethel (Lind) Mitchell, he lived in Dedham, MA, graduating from Dedham High School, and received his Bachelor of Arts Degree in 1959 from Upsala College in East Orange, NJ, and received his Master of Divinity Degree in 1963 from Augustana Seminary in Rock Island, IL. He interned at St. Paul Lutheran Church in Chicago, IL from 1961-1962 and was ordained into the Lutheran Ministry on May 28, 1963 in Cambridge, MA. In 1961, he was married to his lovely wife, Eileen, and they have been married for 51 wonderful years. Gene served Gustaf Adolph Lutheran Church in New Sweden, ME, Trinity Lutheran Church in Stockholm, ME, Good Shepherd Lutheran Church in Rutland, VT, St. Paul Lutheran Church in Proctor, VT, First Lutheran Church in Ellington, and retired after 15 years from Christ the King Lutheran Church in Windsor. He then served Emanuel Lutheran Church in Hartford as a part-time visitation pastor and was on the Stewardship Committee. Rev. Mitchell always encouraged his congregations to be active in the community and participate in social ministry areas in serving those in need. He was part of the New England Synod of the ELCA. He was a member for 12 years and secretary for 4 years of the Board of Trustees of Upsala College, East Orange, NJ, and a member of the Board of Directors of the New England Mission Fund. Gene also was active in various town clergy associations and served as president of all the following, The Greater Rutland, VT Clergy Assoc., The Greater Rockville Clergy Assoc., and the Windsor Clergy Association. Rev. Mitchell was also involved in the community and served as president of the Rutland Lions Club, and was presently a member and past president (1991-1992) of the Windsor/Windsor Locks Rotary Club where he was presented the Paul Harris award. He was a member and past president of the Greater Hartford Scandinavian Cultural Society, and a member of the Swedish Relief Society. Besides his wife, Eileen, he is survived by his son, David Mitchell and his wife Debra of Cleveland Heights, OH; a daughter, Sarah and her husband Karl Hatlemark of Readfield, ME; two grandchildren, Samuel and Lucia Mitchell; a brother, Richard Mitchell and his wife Jeanne of Foxboro, MA; and several nieces and nephews.
His family will receive friends on Saturday, October 13 from 3-6 p.m. at the Carmon Windsor Funeral Home, 807 Bloomfield Ave Windsor. A Memorial Service will be held on Sunday, October 14, 2 p.m., at Emanuel Lutheran Church, 311 Capitol Ave., Hartford, with the Rev. John Corgan and the Rev. E.J. Sweeney officiating. Burial will be in the church memorial garden. A reception will follow at the church. In lieu of flowers, donations in memory of Rev.
