Fred Pignone Obituary

Fred S. Pignone, 86, of Simsbury, beloved husband of Lillian (Weidner) Pignone, passed away on Monday Jan. 26, 2015. Born in Hartford, son of the late Gabriel and Lucille (Bombeto) Pignone, he grew up in Bloomfield, moving to Simsbury in 1962. Fred proudly served in the U.S. Army achieving the rank of Staff Sgt. He was a 30 year member of the Simsbury Volunteer Fire Company retiring as an Assistant Chief. He formed the SVFC Rescue Squad in the 1977, specializing in basket rescues off Talcott Mountain. He was previously a member of the Blue Hills Fire Dept. Fred received both the National Grange Community Citizen and Hometown Hero awards for his dedication to the town of Simsbury. He was an avid R.V. camper and travelled throughout most of the US with his family. He never turned away a good sausage and pepper grinder and he so enjoyed the company of his "granddogs" later in life. Besides his wife of 59 years, he leaves daughter Kathi Mycroft (Bill) of Narragansett, RI and son David Pignone of Florida. He was so proud of his beloved grandchildren Danielle Fain PharmD, 1st Lt Benjamin Fain USAF (Brittany), Michael and Megan Pignone, Ryan and Meagan Mycroft. He also leaves a sister Gloria Cole in Florida. He was predeceased by brothers Thomas and Edward Pignone, and sisters Catherine Anderson, Mary Ann Ferrigno, and Margaret Zambrella. A very special thank you to John Ferrigno who was so very supportive in Fred's later years at home. His family will receive friends and honor a life well lived on Saturday Feb. 7th from 2 to 5 pm at the Vincent Funeral Home, 880 Hopmeadow St., Simsbury. Burial will be private. Please omit flowers. Donations instead may be made to the Simsbury Volunteer Fire Department, 871 Hopmeadow Street, Simsbury, CT 06070.
