BASSOS, George "Coach"

George "Coach" Bassos, 68, of Farmington, formerly of West Hartford, died peacefully early Tuesday morning, (October 11, 2011) at Hartford Hospital. He was born in Hartford, a son of Mary (Cladas) Bassos Murray of Avon and the late Paul Bassos. He attended Conard High School where he was the captain of the football team. He went on to attend Amherst College where he was president of his senior class and earned his bachelors' degree and played football receiving a Little All-American award. He went on to Trinity College to earn his masters' degree. George then embarked on a long career as a high school teacher and football coach where he touched many lives as a respected coach and mentor. As head football coach at Bloomfield High School he took the team to numerous state championships. George was an avid reader and was known for his wonderful Christmas stories. He was both a scholar and an athlete. He loved his family but his love of sports came in a close second. George presently was employed as an English teacher at Walter G. Cady School of Middletown for the past 7 years. He was a member of St. George Greek Orthodox Cathedral in Hartford. Besides his mother, he leaves three loving daughters. Kimbrough Bassos Hull of Sarasota, FL, Laura Shaw of Overland Park, KS, and Wendy Rhoten of Colorado Springs, CO; a brother Charles P. Bassos and his wife Marilyn of Lecanto, FL; and a sister Paula Beauchamp and her husband Michael of Avon; his companion Donna Maloney of Farmington; his former wife, Lucy K. (Francis) McGee of Overland Park, KS; eight grandchildren, Ian, Paiten, Dylan, Braeden, Nate, Jason, Nikki, and Nicholas and many nieces and nephews.
His funeral will be held on Thursday, October 13th at 10 a.m. at St. George Greek Orthodox Cathedral, 433 Fairfield Ave., with burial to follow in Cedar Hill Cemetery, both of Hartford. At his families' request, there will be no calling hours. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to Bloomfield High School Athletics Department, 5 Huckleberry Lane, Bloomfield, CT 06002.
