Gertrude Penfield Obituary

PENFIELD, Gertrude Barton Gertrude Barton Penfield, 91, passed away peacefully on Sunday (April 13, 2008) at Geer Village in Canaan. Born April 1, 1917 in Hartford to Charles Barton and Wilhelmina Henning Barton, she was the loving wife for 66 years to George R. Penfield who predeceased her in 2006. She was a longtime resident of Simsbury, moving to Largo, FL in1972 and back to Connecticut in 2002. She is survived by two sons, Peter Penfield and his wife, Lillian of New Hartford, Robert Penfield and his wife, Bonnie of Phoenix, MD, granddaughters Kim Penfield of Torrington and Lisa Penfield of South Windsor, a brother, Parker Barton, of Clearwater, FL, along with several nieces and a nephew. Gertrude grew up in Hartford attending local schools and was a national honor society graduate of Hartford Public High School. She worked as a private secretary to the senior vice president at the Traveler's Insurance Company where she won a scholarship to Connecticut Business College. Moving to Simsbury, she was active in the Simsbury Republicans Club, the Order of Eastern Star, the 58 Club, the PTA, Boy Scouts, and Cub scouts. She worked many years at the Simsbury Firehouse Main station as a dispatcher. In addition, she was an avid golfer and a member of the Golf Club of Avon, winning a number of tournaments. Gertrude will be remembered by all as a loving and caring wife, mother, grandmother and friend who enjoyed people, socializing, travel and especially shopping. The family wishes to sincerely thank the staff at Geer Village for its caring support and consideration. Their compassion is warmly appreciated. No calling hours or funeral service is planned. In lieu of flowers the family asks you make a donation to the charity of your choice.
