GROPPO, John G.
John G. Groppo, beloved father and grandfather died peacefully on June 12, 2013 surrounded by his family. He was born August 14, 1921 in Winsted, CT to the late Leo and Adele (Zecchin) Groppo. John was a lifelong resident of Winsted attending St. Anthony School and The Gilbert School. He was a communicant of St. Joseph Church. A stone mason by trade, he was the owner of Leo Groppo & Son, Mason Contractors. A World War II veteran, he served with the United States Marine Corps from 1942-1946. With pride and distinction, John served the Town of Winsted as Mayor, 1965-1967; Democratic Registrar of Voters; Democratic Town Chairman; Deputy Chief of Winsted Fire Department Engine 2; member of the W.L. Gilbert Trust Corp.; Chairman, Northwest Community Bank Corp.; Past Grand Knight, 4th Degree, Knights of Columbus, Winchester Counsel #22 member for 71 years; and a member of B.P.O.E. #844 and Veterans of Foreign Wars. John served the State of Connecticut with honor. His honesty and no nonsense style gained respect from colleagues at all levels. He was elected State Representative, 63rd District, from 1959-1985. In the General Assembly, he served as House Majority Leader; Chairman of the Appropriations Committee; Chairman of the Claims Committee; Legislative Program Review and Investigations Committee; Joint Committee on Legislative Management; Executive and Legislative Nominations Committee; and the Judiciary Selection Committee. He served as Commissioner, Department of Revenue Services from 1985-1987. Besides his parents, John was predeceased by his wife of 63 years, Sadie (Avenia), his brothers, Gurino, Louis, Alfred, Julio and Reno Groppo. He was a man of uncommon kindness, with a gracious, generous spirit, always living up to the ideals of his faith. The beneficiaries of this spirit are his children, Linda Groppo, Simsbury, Mary Weinbach, Winsted, Theresa and husband David Jacob, Middletown, Nancy and husband Attorney Philip Groth, West Hartland, Dr. John G. Groppo, Jr., and his wife Bonnie, Nicholasville, KY, and Gloria and her husband Robert Williams, Simsbury; and his grandchildren, Holly Manuel, Allison Beck, Landon Barker, Eric and Jonathan Weinbach, Ryan Jacob, Kristen Smith, Philip, Colin, Miles and Gabrielle Groth, Sarah Lawless, Martha and Virginia Groppo, Abbey, Molly and Carly Williams, seven great-grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be held on Monday, June 17, 2013 at St. Joseph Church, Winsted at 10 a.m. Burial will follow at St. Joseph Cemetery with full Military Honors.
