John H. "Jack" Appleby, Jr., 75, of Old Lyme and Holiday, FL died Saturday (March 29, 2003) in Florida, after a long illness. He is the husband of Sheila C. Appleby. Born in Old Lyme on February 13, 1928, he was the son of the late John H. and Helen Sheridan Appleby. He was an army veteran of the Korean War and was awarded the Silver Star for valor, John was a self-employed plumbing and heating contractor operating Appleby Plumbing and Heating, Inc. on the shoreline for over 30 years. He was a charter life member of VFW Post 1467 Lyme-Old Lyme and a member of the American Legion Post 41, Lyme, the Connecticut Plumbing and Heating Contractors Association, the 40th Infantry Division Alumni Association and a member of Christ the King Church, Old Lyme. He was an avid fan of the New York Yankees. In addition to his wife he is survived by three sons, William Appleby of Clinton, Charles Appleby of Old Saybrook and Michael Appleby of Old Lyme; two daughters, Mary Naehring of Old Lyme and Jacqueline Young of Fairfax City, VA; and seven grandchildren. A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 10 a.m. on Saturday at Christ the King Church. Burial will follow in Duck River Cemetery, Old Lyme. Friends may call at the Fulton-Theroux Funeral Home, Beckwith Ln., Old Lyme on THURSDAY evening from 7-9 p.m. Donations may be made to the John H. Appleby Scholarship Fund, c/o Citizens Bank, P0 Box 545, Old Lyme, CT 06371. This scholarship will be used for continuing education in the plumbing, heating and cooling trades.
