Joseph A. MILLER Obituary

MILLER, Joseph A.

Joseph A. Miller, 83, a lifelong resident of Suffield, passed away Saturday, July 27, 2013 after a fall on Thursday at his home. Joseph was born to the late Howard F. and Helen (Albert) Miller on April 25, 1930. He attended Suffield High and Suffield Academy before entering the US Air Force. Joseph was married to Geraldine Piaggi in 1955 and they had 3 children, Joseph Anthony, Gary and Gena. His work life consisted of helping out on his grandfather's tobacco farm from early childhood through much of the first half of his life. He also worked at Kaman Aircraft, Hamilton Standard as an aircraft parts inspector, and spent many years at Continental Can Co. before retiring in 1995. Upon his retirement he went back to the farm and helped his son Gary for many years in the tobacco business and really seemed to enjoy this until 2009 when his orthopedic health would no longer allow him to get on and off the tractor. He enjoyed all sports and always enjoyed the thrill and excitement of going to the horse races with many friends and family over the years, until most had passed, but still managed to go to the teletrack on occasions as his physical health deteriorated. He was also an avid gardener, sometimes known as the "tomato warden" for his control of the tomato patch. He leaves his son Gary Miller and his wife Audrey of Granville, MA; his daughter Gena Mercier and her husband Brian of Suffield; and three grandchildren, Gregery Miller of Amherst, MA, Jessica Miller and Jason Miller, both of Granville, MA. Besides his parents, he was predeceased by his brother William Miller (1983) and his son Joseph Anthony Miller (2000).
Family and friends may gather at 9 AM Wednesday, July 31 at the Nicholson & Carmon Funeral Home, 443 East St N., Suffield followed by a Mass of Christian Burial at 10 AM at St. Joseph Church, 140 South Main St Suffield. Burial will follow in St. Joseph Cemetery, Suffield. The family will receive friends on Tuesday, July 30 from 6 PM to 8 PM at the funeral home.
