Mary (Starr) Carpenter, 80, of Avon, CT, beloved wife of Merrill "Ed" Carpenter, passed away peacefully Thursday, May 15, 2014 at Arden Courts of Avon. Mary was born February 3, 1934, in Covington, KY, daughter of the late George and Florence (Potts) Bolster. Mary grew up in West Hartford, CT where she attended Hall High School. She graduated from LaSalle College in 1954, with a degree in Retail Management and landed her first job with Lord & Taylor in Hartford, CT. In July of that year, Mary wed E. Clark Starr from West Hartford. They were married for 26 years, spending most of that time in Farmington, CT where they raised three children. During those years Mary enjoyed playing tennis, bridge and was active in community theatre through Myth Farmington. In 1983, Mary married Ed Carpenter. They lived in Avon where they spent 30 wonderful years. Together they enjoyed square-dancing, bowling, traveling in their motor home and running a small business building and selling wooden toys. They were very active members of their church, St. James Parish of Farmington. Mary retired from Aetna in 1994 where she worked full time for 15 years. She held numerous part-time positions throughout her life always balancing her first priority of caring for her family. Among others, she was a real estate agent with Heublein Realty, and a bookkeeper for Budwitz & Meyerjack and The Contessa Shop. Mary particularly enjoyed her work with first-graders as a teacher's aide at the West District School and Noah Wallace School in Farmington. Mary will be dearly missed and lovingly remembered by her family. She leaves her three children, Kenneth Starr and his longtime partner Kay Comaford of Scottsdale, AZ; Cynthia Hufsmith and her husband Robert of Avon, CT; Jacqueline Kozlowski and her husband Stephen of Middletown, CT; four grandchildren, Heather Starr, Justin Hufsmith, Amy Kozlowski and Caitlin Kozlowski; and one great grandchild Tyler (Starr) Briggs. In addition, she leaves three step-children, Merrill Carpenter, Jr. (Margaret), Marilynn Rokes (Ronald) and Peter Carpenter (Karri); eight step-grandchildren and three step-great grandchildren. Mary was predeceased by her brother John "Jack" Bolster and is survived by two brothers William Bolster, Donald Bolster and six nephews. The family would like to sincerely thank the special staff at Arden Courts of Avon and the many caretakers and hospice nurses who treated Mary with compassion and dignity throughout her illness and gave her comfort and peace in her final days. The family will receive friends on Friday, May 30, 2014 from 4:00-7:00 pm at the Ahern Funeral Home, 111 Main Street, Unionville, CT. A memorial service to honor Mary's life will be held on Saturday, May 31, 2014 at 11:00 a.m. at St. James Parish, 3 Mountain Road, Farmington, CT. A private burial will take place at a later date according to her wishes. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made in Mary's name to the , 2075 Silas Deane Highway, Rocky Hill, CT 06067.
