Millard Manning Obituary

MANNING, Millard Millard Manning of Willimantic died peacefully at home on Friday (February 27, 2004). He was born in Norwich, on July 31, 1915 to Dora (Arnold) and Ernest Manning and raised in Lebanon. He was a Lebanon Dairy farmer and drove a six-horse team for UConn's agricultural school for many years before switching to Poultry in South Windham. His activities included serving as 4H Leader; active member of Lebanon Grange; Eastern Star Lodge #44, and President of Natchaug PTO. He had strong ties to the Baptist Church in Willimantic and the Willimantic and Lebanon Congregational churches. All of these activities played a backup role to his strong love of family, including an annual family birthday party with attendance exceeding 100. He attended 88 years of Manning/Robinson family reunions and served as reunion president for three years. These reunions held on the Lebanon green with eligible participation of just under 1,500 celebrated family lineage dating back to the Mayflower. He enjoyed playing horseshoes, and shuffleboard as well as games of cribbage and set-back at anytime and anywhere. He is survived by his wife of 41 years Madeleine (Hartley) Hinckley Manning, and three sons and spouses; Peter and Christin Manning of Winchester, MA, Robert and Maria Hinckley of Bolton, Scott and Louise Hinckley of Shirley, MA, and daughter Pamela Hinckley and Mike Teer of Seattle, WA, grandchildren:Peter and Nicky Manning, Adam, Emilia, and Julia Hinckley. He was predeceased by his first wife Gertrude (Rosebrooks) Storrs Manning and is survived by son Harold and Barbara Storrs of Niantic, and daughters Phyllis and Warren Covell of Syracuse, NY and Lucille and Oliver (brother) Manning of Lebanon, grandchildren: Mary-Anne, Carolyne , Bethany, Dora; April, Gwen, Philip and Timothy; Kim, Tina, and May. He was predeceased by siblings: Rowland, Imogene, Harriet, Norman, Stephen, and Ernest, and is survived by sister, Deborah Wanagel of Coventry and 25 nephews and 21 nieces. Calling hours will be at the Willimantic Congregational Church Auditorium on Friday March 5, from 6-8 p.m. including a 7 p.m. Masonic Service. A memorial service will be held on Saturday at 11 a.m. in the sanctuary.
