Nicholas LaPenta Obituary

LaPENTA, Nicholas Nicholas Anthony LaPenta of Manchester, died Saturday (September 15, 2007), at the age of 84 surrounded by his loving wife, Sylvia, and family. Nick was born on May 8, 1923, in Hartford to the late Egidio and Enrica Galli LaPenta, originally of Corleto Pentecara, Potenza, Italy. Nick grew up in the South End and graduated from Bulkeley High School in 1941. He served as a bombardier with the 15th Air Force in World War II and flew 50 missions over Europe in a B-24. He served again in the Korean War and was stationed with the 2nd Armored Cavalry in Germany. In 1949 he was a member of the first class to graduate from Hillyer College, now the University of Hartford. A resident of Manchester since 1950, Nick was an active member of North United Methodist Church, where he served on many committees, ushered and taught Sunday School. He worked as an insurance agent with John Hancock Life Insurance Co. from 1952 until 1984, and was very involved in labor union activities. In 1969 Nick co-founded Manchester State Bank, now Webster Bank, together with the late John Rohan. From 1984 to 2001 he ran LaPenta Real Estate Agency with his wife Sylvia. He retired in 2001 at 78. He was a charter member of the Manchester Chapter of UNICO and was active in Post 102 of the American Legion, the Army Navy Club, the VFW, Memorial Lodge No. 38 of the Knights of Pythias and the Manchester Country Club. He also volunteered for several years at the MAC shelter for the homeless. His many passions included dancing, golf, bocce and playing cards with friends. At the age of 81, Nick began a one-man crusade against the Iraq War, protesting every Saturday morning in downtown Manchester until his final illness. And each spring he devoted his time to selling poppies to aid the veterans. He is survived by his wife of 60 years, Sylvia Wescott LaPenta, formerly of Hartford, his daughter Arlene S. LaPenta of Manchester, his son Andrew N. LaPenta of East Hartford, his son James W. LaPenta of Rossville, GA., his brother Hugo R. LaPenta and his wife Gloria of Wethersfield, his brother-in-law Mynot Moule of Windsor Locks, his granddaughters Bethany L. Tougas and her husband Andrew of Manchester, Melanie L. Hoben and her husband Kurt of Manchester, Mary Elizabeth LaPenta of East Hartford, and his daughter-in-law Barbara Ainsworth of East Hartford. He was predeceased by his sister Rosetta L. Rezendes, his brother Lawrence A. LaPenta, his nephew Nicholas J. LaPenta, and his sister-in-law Hazel M. Moule. A devoted husband, father and friend to many, he was loyal and helpful to all who knew him. He instilled lasting values of faith, family, friendship and the sheer joy of living. There will be calling hours at Holmes Funeral Home, 400 Main Street, Manchester on Wednesday, September 19, from 4 to 7pm. A Funeral Service will be held on Thursday, September 20, at 10am at North United Methodist Church, 300 Parker Street, Manchester. Burial with military honors will follow in Buckland Cemetery, Manchester. The family would like to thank the VNA Hospice, especially Helen, Barbara and Maria, for the loving and exceptional care they gave to Nick and his family. To the LaPenta Family:
I remember Nick as my Sunday school teacher, and as one of the rocks of North United Methodist Church. He was a true patriot both in his military service and in his opposition to the Iraq war. We didn't always agree, but I know that everything he did, he did out of a sense of duty to country and family, and love for his church. Please accept my condolences for your loss.

We graduated from Bulkeley together in 1941..as a part of that star-crossed generation swept up in war. So many...too many young men would never return. I didn't know that Nick had flown on 50 missions...an almost impossible feat in such perilous times.I never saw much of Nick after Bulkeley but how I do remember him....the kind of person who might "tilt with windmills"....or who would work against the tide...or one who would spend his free time protesting some injustice in the world...We did however meet once about 20 years later...I was ina military convoy travelling along the NY Thruway to Fort Drum when we stopped for a break....and there was Nick....out of the blue we had met for a brief moment in time and we talked and talked...we reminisced ...and we promised to get together and keep in touch but of course as so often the case , we didn't...the loss was mine. I am glad that he has such a loving , caring family; I know that you will miss him terribly but rejoice that you had him for the time that you did. Let me leave you with some words by an RAF pilot who died over the English Channel in the war..."I've topped the wind=swept heights with easy grace...where never lark, or even eagle flew-and while with silent lifting mind I've trod the high untrespassed sanctity of space, Put out my hand and touched the face of God." ....but in this instance I 'd like to think that it was God who reached out to Nick and gathered him unto Himself forever more...Grace be unto you and peace....may Nick rest in peace and rise in glory...William N Tedesco (Lt Col AUS-ret)

To my dear friends, Mrs LaPenta, Arlene,Jimmy and Andy,
Always a smile, a joke, a quick two-step or waltz, such was a devoted husband, father and friend. That devotion to God, country and heritage is remarkable and well worth continuing in legacy, as I know it already is. A lot to step up to? You bet, but we are all so richly blessed for having been shown this example of such an honorable man. Break into some of the loudest Italian voices and song to celebrate his life.
He will be missed and cherished. Love Linda

There was a void in our planet when Nick left. I have never known a man so full of life. He had the soul of a young man but alas his body gave out before he did. I will miss him always and attempt to continue his peace vigil as well as one can without Nick. I know this is a way of honoring this dear man. Sylvia, I can only imagine your grief. You were so good to him and he ofen spoke of your kindness. I looked on my calendar Monday morn. and there was Nick's name for a breakfast date. I hope soon that you, Sylvia will take his seat at breakfast. Love and Peace, Shari Norwood

Sylvia,Arlene,Andy andJimmy,
What a legacy Nick left to all. We feel so blesse to have known such a compassionate, fun, loving man. Nick never did or said anything "halfway" and for that we'll always remember him and his passion of life. Thank you all for sharing such an exceptional person. I for one believe Nick had to have some Irish in him since he was such a wonderful story teller with such wit. Bless you all.
