CARTLEDGE, Norman Dean


Norman Dean Cartledge of Rocky Hill, loving husband of Ellen Elizabeth (Giordano) Cartledge for 33 years, passed away on January 14, 2013 at Hartford Hospital after a lengthy illness. He was born in San Diego, CA, July 18, 1937, son of the late Luther Aldine Cartledge and Bonnie Jeanette (Dillingham) Cartledge, and grew up in Jonesboro, GA. He graduated from Jonesboro High School. He received a BS degree and an MS degree from the University of Georgia. In 1972, he received a PhD in Industrial Psychology from the University of Maryland and in 1989, at the age of 52, received a JD degree from the University of Connecticut School of Law. He was also a member of the Sigma Chi fraternity. While at the University of Maryland, he co-authored several journal articles with Dr. Edwin P. Locke, a renowned expert in job satisfaction and goal setting. While serving in the Army (1961-1963), he performed Personnel Research at the U.S. Army Infantry Human Research Unit at Fort Benning, GA. From 1971 through the mid-nineties, he worked as an Industrial Psychologist at the Connecticut Mutual Life Insurance Company, having several positions, including Director of Corporate Research. He was very active in insurance research, serving on several select industry-wide committees, including LIMRA's Research Planning Council, the Insurance Director's Research Group, the LOMA Personnel Research Committee, and the ACLI Personnel Research Committee. He was also a featured speaker at insurance industry research conferences. He is survived by his beloved wife, Ellen; his brother, Dr. Densford Cartledge, and his wife, Carolyn, of Stone Mountain, GA; his brother-in-law and sister-in-law, Robert and Dorothy Giordano of Saratoga Springs, NY; his sister-in-law, Helen Giordano, of Glen Head, NY; and his nieces and nephews, Tracy Cartledge, and Densford Cartledge, Jr. of Georgia; Robert and Nancy Turner of Naples, FL.; Robert Giordano, Jr. of Los Angeles; Susan Giordano of Glen Head, NY; and Edward and Valerie Giordano of Loudonville, NY. He is also survived by grand-nieces and grand-nephews, Amanda and Blake Turner of Naples, FL and Heather and Nicholas Giordano of Loudonville, NY. Norman was a devoted fan of the New York Yankees, the University of Georgia Bulldogs football team, and the UCONN Women's and Men's basketball teams. He will be dearly missed by his family and friends.
Funeral services will be private. A Memorial Service will be held at a later date.
