Paul Allen MORTELL

MORTELL, Paul Allen Paul Allen Mortell, formerly of Fairfield, died Thursday, (December 31, 2009) in Sarasota, FL. He was born April 7, 1931, in Brooklyn, NY, son of the late Thomas Mortell and Irene Bayer Mortell. He was a graduate of The Gunnery, Washington, CT, class of 1949, and Trinity College, Hartford, class of 1953. After college, Paul served in the United States Air Force as a 2nd Lieutenant. Paul retired as a salesman after working for Arrow Hart/ Cooper Industries for over 30 years. Paul is survived by his wife, Carole Strong Mortell, of Longboat Key, FL and Mulmur, Ontario; his brother, Robert B. Mortell, of St Petersburg, FL and Charlottesville, VA; his son, Bennett B. Mortell and daughter-in-law, Leanne King Mortell, of Unity, NH; and his daughter, Maggie Mortell Griesing and son-in-law, James Griesing of Brimfield, MA; his grandson, Michael E. Mortell, of Brooklyn, NY; and his granddaughter, Quinn D. Mortell of Raleigh, NC. He was preceded in death by his first wife Peg Mortell and his son Porter T. Mortell. Paul was a past member of Brooklawn Country Club. He was a long time resident of Longboat Key and active in the community. He sat on the board of directors of the Longboat Key Center for the Arts and was committed to bringing fine jazz to the Key by solicited sponsors and finding artists for the Jazz at the Center series. He was a long time suffering New York Giants football fan but his passion was tennis, serving as past president of the Longboat Key Tennis Association. He spent countless hours coordinating schedules to ensure that the teams he coached were positioned to win. Paul will be remembered for his honesty, his loyalty and his commitment to his family and friends. A memorial service was held Friday, January 8, 2010, in Florida. A memorial service and burial will follow this summer at the family plot in Mountain Grove Cemetery, Bridgeport. Announcement of memorial service will follow.
