COHN, Richard A. Richard A. Cohn, 60, of West Hartford, died Thursday, (October 12, 2006) at Hartford Hospital of complications from leukemia. He is survived by his wife of 29 years, Sandra Morgan, and his daughters, Heather Cohn of New York City and Ensign Catherine Cohn, U.S. Navy, of Seattle, WA. He is also survived by his father, Marvin M. Cohn of Encinitas, CA and brother and sister-in-law, Ronald and Jerry Cohn of China Lake, CA. He was predeceased by his mother, Muriel Cohn, and his stepmother, Mary Cohn. Richard was born in Chicago and grew up in Sacramento, CA. He received a bachelors degree from Harvard University, 1969 and an M.B.A. from Stanford University, 1972, where he also did his doctoral work. He taught finance at M.I.T. and the Universities of Illinois and British Columbia. In 2004, he retired from his teaching career after 19 years as Professor of Finance at the University of Hartford where he received the distinguished Bent Award for Scholarly Creativity. Richard will be remembered for his innovative research in finance and in particular for his work on the murky mysteries of the stock market, specifically a set of papers that he co-wrote with his colleague Franco Modigliani, winner of the Nobel Prize in Economic Sciences in 1985. He also made a significant contribution as an expert witness in the area of regulation of casualty insurance premiums. In keeping with Richard's wishes, there will be a private service and burial in Fairview Cemetery, West Hartford. The family will receive visitors at the home, on Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday between 5-9 p.m. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to an educational or religious organization of the donor's choice. The Weinstein Mortuary, Hartford, is in charge of the arrangements.

Sandra:
Please accept my sincere condolences for your loss. I had no idea Rich was gone and just found out by chance on the Internet. Rich was an expert witness for me in 2002 when I was representing the Florida Department of Insurance in a workers comp rate filing case. Largely due to his services, we prevailed. He was a brilliant man, gentlemanly, and had a great sense of humor. It was a pleasure to work with him personally as well as professionally. I will never forget that experience.

Professor Cohn was much more than a teacher to me - he was my Godfather. With him has gone a big part of me but I am certain we will cross paths again....I will find him. He is worth every effort in every birth!May God be with him.

I have known Richard for a number of years as a co-worker and am saddened
to hear of his death. I will remember him as a valued colleague who
always had insightful comments and challenged all of us who had the
pleasure of working with him. Our opinions were always better founded after our discussions with Richard. He will be missed.

Prof. Morgan,
I am very sorry for the loss. I met Prof. Cohn only once at EAM conference but can very well remember him for his encouragement and brief but remerkable talk we had. My wishes are with you and your family.

Dear Sandy,
These last two years have been quite a struggle. I am so glad that you and the girls were there with Rich during his last moments. I am also glad that he could see his girls get "launched" into their careers. Your strength, courage, energy and fortitude are absolutely amazing. Although I do not expect it to be easy, I am sure you will handle this transition period in the same terrific manner that you have handled everything else. You continue to be in my thoughts and prayers.

Sandy - My prayers are with you and the girls as you go through this transition. I know you will hold onto the memories of Rich's intelligence, compassion and sense of humor. His life enriched all he touched even if he did so for too short a time. Thinking of you. angie
