BIRNBAUM, Robert B.
Robert B. Birnbaum, Z"L, age 87, of West Hartford, died on Wednesday, (March 31, 2013) surrounded with the love of his children and friends, after a brief but valiant three week battle with lung cancer. Born in New Britain, he was the son of Nathan & Dora Birnbaum. Bob was a Navy veteran of World War II and a graduate of Morse school of Business. He was employed as the office/credit manager for Sticklor Electric Supply Company for over 40 years. He later retired from Electrical Wholesalers. In retirement, Bob continued to help others by taking senior citizens grocery shopping and distributing Passover food to those less fortunate. Bob dedicated his life to Judaism, holding various leadership positions for over 50 years. As a board member of the former Beth Shalom synagogue in Hartford and later Beth Hillel in Bloomfield, he served as chairman of the ritual committee and cemetery committees. At the Agudas Achim synagogue in West Hartford, Bob served on the board of Directors since the mid 1970s. Bob also served as ritual director, Gabi, Vice President, and later, at the age of 80, he became President of the congregation. Bob was very dedicated to B'nai B'rith Ararat Lodge and served as vice president and president for many years. He was a member of the Jewish War Veterans, Laurel Post #45 and proudly walked in the annual West Hartford Memorial Day parade every year until the age of 86. Bob was predeceased, in Sept. of 2010, by his loving wife of almost 62 years, Burnette Birnbaum. He leaves his son, Michael Birnbaum of West Hartford, his daughter, Laura Klein and husband Robert, of West Hartford, and cherished grandchildren Rebecca and Jason Klein. Bob leaves his brothers, Milton Birnbaum and wife Ruth of Palm Beach, David Birnbaum and wife Fayna of New Britain, and Sidney Birnbaum and his partner Tony Pontecorvo of Fairfield, Sisters-in-law, Barbara Hershkovitz of Boca Raton, Ruth Hershkovitz and Joyce Birnbaum of West Hartford. He also leaves his brother-in-law, Fred Rosenbush. Bob was predeceased by his brother Leslie and his sister, Gloria Rosenbush. Bob leaves a very special friend and companion, Ellie Young, who brought him great happiness during his final 2 years. He also leaves several nieces and nephews and many life long friends. Bob lived his life with to the fullest. He had a great sense of humor and loved to socialize with family and friends. He also loved to travel, play golf, and was an avid Yankee fan. He exemplified the values of love and devotion to his family, to his many friends, and to his synagogue.
Funeral services will take place Today, April 3 at 12 Noon, at the Agudas Achim Synagogue, 1244 North Main Street, with Rabbi Ari Weiss officiating. Interment with full military honors will follow at the Beth Hillel Cemetery, 15 Wolcott Rd., East Granby. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Agudas Achim Synagogue or the

Shiva will be observed at the Birnbaum home in West Hartford, following the funeral on Wed and will continue on Thursday from 4-9 p.m. Minyons will be held at the Birnbaum home at 7 p.m. on both nights. The family wishes to thank Annie, Tara, and Jessica and the entire 4th floor nursing staff of UCONN Medical Center, for the excellent care and extraordinary compassion they extended to Bob during the past three weeks.
