CASHMAN, Shaun B.
Shaun B. Cashman, a leading voice for the workers of Connecticut, died peacefully at his home in Old Lyme. Born on June 17, 1936 in Middletown, he was the son of the late William Maurice and Catherine Hannah Cashman. After graduating Middletown High School in 1954, Shaun enlisted in the United States Navy, where he served in the Seabees, stationed in Antarctica. Shaun had a long and illustrious career as an advocate for the working man, serving as Business Manager for Laborers' Local Union 611 for over 25 years, Business Agent for the Connecticut Laborers' District Council and President of the Connecticut State Building Trades. During his career as a labor leader, Shaun completed the Harvard Trade Union Program in conjunction with the Harvard Business School. Shaun was appointed Commissioner of the Department of Labor for the State of Connecticut in 2001 by Governor John G. Rowland, where he served for over six years under both the Rowland and Rell administrations. Shaun is survived by his loving wife Nancy Leyden Cashman; his loving older brother Philip Cashman and his wife Claire of Wethersfield, CT; his son Shaun Cashman and his wife Jodey of Burbank, CA; his son William Cashman and his wife Glenda of San Francisco, CA; his son Tony Cashman and his wife Mary of Avon, CT; and his daughter Cristin Ohlandt and her husband Alex of Larchmont, NY. He is also survived by his stepchildren Miles Brousseau of Worcester, MA; Jesse Bernard and her husband Drew of Stoneham, MA; Kristi Brousseau of Auburn, MA and Tori Brousseau and her fiancé Gregory Anderson of Rutland, MA. "Grampy" will be greatly missed by his loving grandchildren, Nicolas, Arianna, Mia, Anthony, Leyden, Jade, Lily, Ava, Jemma, Holly and Wesley and his many nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his brothers Gerald, Jude, Frank and Paul Cashman and his sister Ann Marino. Shaun was a good friend of Bill W. for 41 years and was an inspiration to many.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Friday, September 28, 2012 at 10 a.m. at St. John's Church, 19 St. John's Square Middletown, CT. Everyone is asked to please go directly to the church. The burial will follow at The Veteran's Cemetery, 307 Bow Lane, Middletown, CT. The family will receive relatives and friends on Thursday September 27, 2012 from 5-8 p.m. at the D'Angelo Funeral Home, 22 South Main Street, Middletown, CT.
