CARLSON, Ralph G., Sr. Ralph Gusta Carlson, Sr., 86, beloved husband of the late Ann (Petrella) Carlson, passed away on Tuesday, (March 29, 2011) at Manchester Memorial Hospital after a brief battle with cancer. Ralph was born September 16, 1924 in Sunne Varmland, Sweden, son of the late Adolf and Olga (Petersson) Carlson. Raised in Hartford, he resided in Manchester before retiring in Largo, FL. He graduated from Hartford High. Ralph was employed by the United States Postal Service in Hartford and East Hartford. He was a proud veteran of World War II having served in the U.S. Army as a Sargent in Iwo Jima. He was president of the Swedish Club in Kensington in the mid 70's and a member of the VFW in FL. He loved bowling and was in a league at the Twedt's Bowling Center in Largo, FL. In his earlier years he loved spending time at the beach with his family. He cherished time spent with his grandchildren and great-grandchildren. Ralph will be most remembered for the twinkle in his eye and his endearing smile which was a constant reminder of what a charming gentleman he truly was. Ralph is survived by his son, Ralph Carlson Jr. and his wife Lea of Andover; his daughters, Nancy Carlson of Manchester, Gail Hartzog and her husband Tom Hesse of Manchester; his brothers, Herbert Carlson of Hartford and Leonard Carlson of Colchester; his sister Agnes Keller and her husband Hershel of Palmetto, FL; his grandchildren Neil Hartzog and his wife Kelly of West Hartford, Adam Hartzog and his wife Lindsay of Manchester, Travis Carlson and his wife Karen of Manchester, Trenton Carlson and his fiancée Monica Lopez of Worcester, MA; his great-grandchildren, Devin, Julia, Alyssa and Gavin Hartzog; Alexandra, Jacob and Gabrielle Carlson and many nieces and nephews; special friends, Tom Hartzog who was like a son to Ralph; Marge Sugden a dear friend; Wayne and Barb Nelson, thanks you for your help. He is predeceased by his siblings, Doris Levesque, Emmy Bennett, Margaret Peck, John and Harry Carlson. A Memorial Service will be held Friday, April 8 at 7 p.m., at Newkirk & Whitney Funeral Home, 318 Burnside Ave., East Hartford. Calling hours are Friday, April 8, from 5-8 p.m. at the funeral home.
