Janice K. RIVARD Obituary

Janice K. Rivard, 59, of Bristol, beloved wife of George A. Rivard, Jr., passed away on Friday, (January 31, 2014) surrounded by her family at home. A devoted wife and mother, Janice was a gentle, caring spirit with a warm sense of humor who enriched the lives of her family, friends, and students. Janice was born in Waterbury on August 27, 1954, to the late John and Helen (Hilinski) Krawchuk. The eldest of four sisters, she spent her early childhood on Benefit Street before moving to Wolcott where she graduated from Wolcott High School in 1972. After studying a year in Seville, Spain, she earned several degrees: a B.A. in Foreign Language from Central Connecticut State University; a Master's and 6th Year degree from the University of Connecticut; and a 7th Year degree from the University of New England. Janice shared her lifelong love of learning teaching students at Slade Middle School and Pulaski Middle School in New Britain for more than 30 years. Her favorite subject to teach was Social Studies and she enjoyed working with the English Language Development Program, and was passionate about working with students of other cultures. A past co-president of the New Britain Teachers Club, she was twice honored with the Torches to Light the Future award from the New Britain Board of Education for her dedication. She was also an active member of St. Matthew Church in Forestville. Janice considered the love of each family member and friend a true gift, and this generous spirit drew an extraordinary circle of friends, from fellow teachers, administrators, staff, and former students to caring neighbors and close friends outside of her professional life. But Janice was happiest when surrounded by her family -- either at home or on recent trips to the Pacific Northwest with her husband and sons that kindled her spirit of adventure and her love of birds. She is survived by her husband, George; her three sons, Bryan and Kevin Rivard of Seattle, WA, and Stephen Rivard of Durham, NH; two sisters, Cheryl Krawchuk of Atlanta, GA, and Barbara Krawchuk of East Hartford. She is predeceased by her sister, Nancy Krawchuk Mrazik. She is also survived by her brother-in-law, Nat Zimmerman of Atlanta, GA.
Funeral Services will begin at 9 AM on Wednesday (February 5, 2014) at Funk Funeral Home, 35 Bellevue Ave., Bristol, followed by Mass of Christian Burial at 10 AM at St. Matthew Church, 120 Church Ave., Forestville .
