Maurice A. Lashin Obituary


Maurice A. Lashin, 88 years of age, of West Hartford, died on February 5, 2014. He was the husband of the late Helen (Kantrowitz) Lashin. Born in Hartford, he was the son of the late Milton and Fannie (Hurwitz) Lashin. He was a U.S. Army Veteran of World War II. Maurice, better known as "Moe", and his wife Helen owned and operated the former Lashin's Market on Park Street in Hartford, until retiring in 1985. He was a member of the former Teferes Israel Synagogue of Bloomfield, the Jewish War Veterans, and the West Hartford Regents. He entered the Service in 1943, serving in the 101st Airborne before being injured during Paratrooper training. He was then reassigned to the 42nd Infantry and 542nd Field Artillery Battalion before volunteering for medical school and becoming a Surgical Technician at Fort Sam Houston's Brook Army Hospital. He then volunteered to help open a POW hospital in Okmulgee, OK, reached the rank of Sergeant, and was honorably discharged to the Active Reserves in April 1946. He was assigned to the 308th Hospital Train, then the 819th Station Hospital at the Reserve Armory on Quaker Lane until retiring as First Sergeant E-8 in August 1966. He leaves two sons, Terry A. Lashin and his wife Lisa of Melville, NY, and Paul R. Lashin and his wife Kathryn of New York, NY; two daughters, Marilyn Weil and her husband Marvin of East Hartford, and Deborah Butler of West Hartford; and eight grandchildren, Jacob Weil, Shera Berlin and her husband Daniel, Arielle Herman and her husband Adam, Jennifer Lashin, Allison Butler, Eric Butler, Ruby Lashin, and Vivienne Lashin. He also leaves his sister-in-law Sylvia Salad, his nieces, nephews, and so many other loving members of his extended family. Funeral services will be held at 11:00 AM on Friday, February 7th, in the Chapel of the Weinstein Mortuary, 640 Farmington Ave., Hartford with Rabbi Howard Herman officiating. Interment will follow in Beth El Temple Cemetery, Jackson St. Ext., Avon, CT. Memorial periods will be observed at 18 Henley Way, West Hartford, CT, on Saturday, February 8th, 7PM-9PM, and Sunday, February 9th, 1PM-4PM and 7PM-9PM. An additional memorial period will be observed at 39 Cabriolet Lane, Melville, NY, on Monday, February 10th, 7PM-9PM. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to Disabled American Veterans at www.dav.org, Jewish War Veterans at www.jwv.org, and the Hebrew Home at www.hebrewhealthcare.org.
