Sister Ellen Marie COBURN Obituary

Sister Ellen Marie Coburn of the Sisters of Mercy of the Americas died Wednesday (Feb. 5, 2014) at St. Mary Home. Born in Hartford April 10, 1927, Sister was the 8th of nine children born to the late Frank and Mary (Connors) Coburn. Sister Ellen grew up in East Hartford and Manchester and graduated from Lauralton Hall in Milford. Following in her sister's footsteps, she entered the Sisters of Mercy at the age of 19 and professed religious vows on January 3, 1949. For 29 years Sister taught young children, primarily second graders, in Catholic schools throughout the Archdiocese of Hartford before obtaining a nursing assistant certificate. With these new skills, Sister ministered to the sick and elderly at St. Mary Home, Mercyknoll, The McAuley and as a Private Duty Companion to many, including her own aging mother. Sister Ellen is remembered as being very prayerful and is described by one CNA as "a humble spirit, a woman of God". She possessed a quiet demeanor but could also be feisty! Her compassion and generosity knew no bounds; others' needs always came before her own. Sister is predeceased by seven siblings: Harriet, Francis, Robert, Joseph, Anthony, Joan and Sister Catherine Ann, also a Sister of Mercy. She is survived by her brother John, many devoted nieces and nephews and her sisters in community. Sister Ellen Marie's life will be celebrated with a Mass of the Resurrection on Monday, Feb. 10 at 6:00PM in the chapel at St. Mary Home. Friends may call from 3-5 PM prior to the Mass. Burial will be in St. Mary Cemetery on Tuesday at 9:00AM. Those wishing to make a contribution in Sister's memory are asked to consider the Sisters of Mercy, c/o 55 East Cedar St., Newington 06111.
