William James Harris III Obituary

William James Harris, III (LCpl USMC) beloved husband of Catherine (Gosselin) Harris, passed peacefully into his eternal reward while at home on Saturday (February 8, 2014) surrounded by his loving family. Bill was born in Bethesda, Maryland on November 24, 1954, the son of William James Harris, II (Lt. Cmdr. Ret. USN) of Amarillo, TX and the late Betty Jean (Whittlesey) Harris. Father of five, he is survived by Michael J. Harris and his wife Lauren of Grand Junction, MI, Brendan J. Harris (Lt. Cmdr. USCG) and his wife Peggy of Kaneohe, HI, Justin J. Harris (SSgt, USAF) and his wife Anook of Torrington, Joan Marie (Harris) Smith and her husband Matthew Smith (Cpt. USAF) of Henderson, NV, and Rosanne Harris of Somers. He is the loving Grandfather of Gianna, Abigail, Brigid, Joseph, Clara, Colin, Alaina, Luke, Katelyn, and Devin. He is also survived by his sisters Kathleen Goody, Lisa Shelanskas, Sheila Mallinson, Jeanine Barnett, Teresa Hicking and their husbands. He leaves numerous nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his brother Michael Allen Harris, grandson Gregory Joseph Harris, granddaughter Colleen Bernadette Smith, and five little angels awaiting his arrival. Bill was a man of deep faith and dedication to his family. He retired from the U.S. Postal Service in 2012. He was an avid reader. He enjoyed hiking, biking, running, caving, and rock climbing. When his children were young, he planned and created elaborate obstacle courses and workout routines that challenged them. Dabbling in such skill sets as carpentry, masonry, rug making, and landscaping, he employed the many talents and the wherewithal with which he was blessed to create a frequently evolving home that accommodated the many stages of his family's growth and development. Eternal rest grant unto him, O Lord, and let perpetual light shine upon him. May the souls of the faithful departed, through the mercy of God, rest in peace. Amen. Family and friends may gather, Wednesday, Feb 12 at 9 a.m. at Somers Funeral Home, 354 Main St., Somers, followed by a Mass of Christian Burial at 10 a.m. at All Saints Church, 25 School St., Somers. Burial with military honors will follow at Center Cemetery, Somers. His family will receive friends Tuesday, Feb 11 from 4 to 7 p.m. at Somers Funeral Home. In lieu of flowers memorial donations may be made to Dominican Sisters of Cecilia, 801 Dominican Dr., Nashville, TN 37228.
