Thomas K. Burns Obituary


Thomas K. Burns 88, died February 28, 2014. He was born in West Haven on April 18, 1925 to Mark and Elizabeth (Lavallee) Burns. He attended the Carnegie Institute of Technology and received a Bachelor's degree in Architecture. He became a registered architect who practiced in the Greater Hartford area with Irving Rutherford and Charles DuBose & Associates. In 1975 he opened his own firm, TK Burns & Associates in East Hartford and later in Glastonbury. Over the years he designed or was involved in the design of many local projects, both large and small, including Constitution Plaza, the Silver Lane Post Office, and St. Elizabeth Seton Church. He was dedicated to community service as a member or officer in many professional, political, service or social organizations such as CT Society of Architects, AIA; East Hartford Chamber of Commerce; East Hartford Visiting Nurse Association; East Hartford Jaycees; East Hartford Exchange Club; East Hartford Democratic Town Committee; Capitol Region Planning Agency; Capitol Region Council of Government Regional Forum; AARP Tax Counseling-Rocky Hill Coordinator. He was a veteran of WWII and served in the Army's 19th Infantry Regiment, 24th Division in New Guinea and the Philippines. He was awarded a number of service medals including the Asiatic Theatre medal with 3 Battlestars, the Bronze Star, and the Philippine Liberation medal. He is survived by his wife of 64 years, Mary (Quarto) Burns of Rocky Hill and his three daughters Cindy Bourassa of Niantic, Patricia and Harry Hanelt of Easton, Ginger and Ed Whalen of Glastonbury. He leaves seven grandchildren Jill Bourassa, Natalee Hill, Edmond Bourassa, Lindsey Hanelt, Kelly Hanelt, Tara Whalen, Thomas Whalen and six great-grandchildren. He is also survived by his sister Alice Edson of West Haven and numerous nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his brothers Ralph, Daniel and Mark Jr and his sister Janice. Calling hours will be from 9:30-10:30 am Saturday, March 8, 2014 at Rose Hill Funeral Home, 580 Elm St., Rocky Hill. A Funeral Mass will follow at 11:00 am in St. Elizabeth Seton Church, 280 Brook St., Rocky Hill. Burial will be at the convenience of the family. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Visiting Nurse Association in your local area.
