Michael G. Economos Obituary

Michael George Economos, 81, of West Hartford, CT, died peacefully in his home at sunrise on Thursday, March 6, 2014. He was surrounded by his loving family and close friends. He was born on September 1, 1932 in Birmingham, Alabama, the son of George & Bessie Economos. Michael immigrated to Greece at 6 months of age to escape the perils of the Great Depression. At age 15, he and his family returned back to the United States to escape the unfit conditions of German occupied Greece during WW2. These struggles left a permanent impression but helped him become the great man that he was. Michael worked hard to earn his Mechanical Engineering Degree from Farleigh Dickinson University. Shortly after, in 1961, he was employed at Pratt & Whitney as a test engineer and made a name for himself with two great accomplishments on the SR-71 Blackbird Engine. With his success, in 1966, he started his own company, Becon Inc, with his first of many contracts from P&W. Throughout the years, Michael bought, successfully ran and sold other manufacturing companies, was a director of a Hartford bank, but Becon has endured and thrived through this day, employing nearly 200 people. Michael is survived by his wife of 54 years, Bess Economos, his daughter Maria Economos, son George Economos and daughter in-law Carla, and 5 fabulous grandchildren, Vasilea & Xenia Bradley, Alexandra, Nickolas, and Anastasia Economos, as well as the beloved dog Maddie. Michael was predeceased by his beloved daughter, Lea Michelle Economos, who succumbed to leukemia at the young age of 28. In her honor, Michael founded and Chaired the Lea's Foundation for Leukemia Research for over 16 years, and it will survive this day. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made to this foundation, located at 150 Trumbull St, 2nd Floor, Hartford, CT, 06103, www.leasfoundation.org. Calling hours will be on Sunday, March 9th, 2014, from 3-8:00 PM, with a prayer service at 6:00 PM, at the Dillon-Baxter Funeral Home, 1276 Berlin Turnpike, Wethersfield, CT. The funeral service will be held on Monday, March 10th, at 11:00 AM, at St. George Greek Orthodox Cathedral, 433 Fairfield Ave, Hartford, CT with the Rev. Dr. George Zugravu. Burial service will immediately follow at the Cedar Hill Cemetery in Hartford. To share a memory with the family, please visit www.dillonbaxter.com
