George W. Simpson Obituary

George W. Simpson, 89, of Forestville passed away peacefully on March 6, 2014. Born in Waterville, ME on May 23, 1924, he was the son of Harry and Nora (Mahaffy) Simpson Breau. He is survived by his loving wife of 60 years, Irene Bozek Simpson; his three children - Meg Hudson and her husband Jay of Gaysville, VT, Brian Simpson and his wife Kathy of Quincy, MA, and George Simpson and his wife Nancy of Pittsfield, VT. He was known as "Poppy" by his six grandchildren - Jeremy Hudson and his wife Lindsey, CJ Hudson, Patrick Hudson, Max Simpson, Geoff Simpson, and Matthew Simpson. George was a veteran of WWII. He served as Staff Sergeant in the Army and was seriously wounded in action in the European theatre. He was a recipient of the Silver Star, Bronze Star, and Purple Heart for his valor and service to his country. He went on to attend Central Connecticut State University. He worked in the Bristol school system for over 30 years, influencing countless individuals as teacher and principal. He was proud of opening Edgewood and Northeast Schools during his career. George always referred to his students as "my kids". Upon retiring in 1983, George enjoyed spending long summers and holidays with his family. He especially enjoyed the presence of his six grandsons whom he had a profound influence on. He and his wife also enjoyed periodic trips around New England to visit their children. George was an active member of Saint Matthews Church of Forestville. The family would like to thank the kind and loving staff at Bristol Hospital Home Care, the Summit at Plantsville, and VITAS Hospice for their care and support of George and his family. Calling hours will be held on Sunday, March 9, 2014 from 4 to 6PM at O'Brien Funeral Home, 24 Lincoln Ave., Bristol/Forestville. Funeral services will be held on Monday, March 10, 2014 at 9AM from the funeral home to St. Matthew Church, Forestville for a Mass of Christian Burial at 10AM. Burial with military honors will follow at St. Joseph Cemetery, Bristol. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to St. Matthews Church, 120 Church Ave., Forestville, CT. 06010.
