Donald Leavitt Obituary


Donald "Don" Leavitt, Sr. 93, of Newington, died peacefully at Harford Hospital, Friday, March 7, 2014 with his family by his side. He was the beloved husband of the late Ruth (Charboneau) Leavitt for 69 years. Born in Hartford he resided in Newington for 58 years. Don, a WW II veteran was a sergeant in the U.S. Army serving in France, Belgium and Germany from 1942-1946. Don retired from the State of Connecticut Department of Transportation as Deputy Commissioner, Bureau of Highways in 1987. He received an official citation from the CT. General Assembly for 38 years of loyal and dedicated service to the department. Don was an avid golfer and enjoyed the game into his 80's. A loving and devoted husband, father, grandfather and great-grandfather he will be dearly missed. He leaves his sons, Donald Leavitt, Jr. and wife, Laura, William Leavitt and wife, Linda all of Newington; four grandchildren, Jason Leavitt and wife, Jennifer of Cromwell, Corey Leavitt and wife, Lisa of Wethersfield, Kristen Wiggins and husband, Justin of Newington and Cara Baumgartel and husband, Kenny of Glastonbury. He also leaves three great grandchildren, Cole and Chase Leavitt and Logan Baumgartel as well as several nephews and a niece. Don was predeceased by his sister, Lorraine Dodge and brother, Russell. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated Tuesday at 10:00 a.m. at St. Mary's Church, 626 Willard Avenue, Newington. Entombment will follow in Cedar Hill Cemetery, Hartford.
