Maria Fichera Obituary

Maria (Giuliano) Fichera, 73, of Hartford, died peacefully on Saturday, March 15, 2014, surrounded by her loving family. Born in Lentini, Sicily, Italy, to the late Josephine (Ruffino) and Salvatore Giuliano, she was raised in Melilli, Sicily, and moved to the United States at the age of 14. She was a longtime Hartford resident and made many lifelong friends. Maria was a hardworking woman, employed at Pratt & Whitney and Colt Manufacturing from where she retired. She enjoyed cooking for her family and friends, and her Wednesday Bingo games at the Wethersfield Senior Center. A devoted and loving mother, grandmother and great grandmother, who raised three daughters; Natalie-Lina Fichera and her husband Gary Nuckols of Jacksonville, FL, Sandra Gentile and her husband Giuseppe of Rocky Hill, Lisa Vitale and her husband Richard of Cromwell. She also leaves her five grandchildren, Jessica Mozzicato, Salvatore and Anthony Gentile, and Elaine and Marisa Vitale; and a great grandson Vincent Mozzicato. She is also survived by two brothers, Frank Giuliano and his wife Lucia of Wethersfield, Carmen Giuliano and his wife Linda of Glastonbury; two sisters, her twin Nella Catalano of Sicily, Italy, and Bianca DiBernardo and her husband Luigi of Glastonbury; two sisters-in-law Maria Giuliano of Glastonbury and Sofia Giuliano of Rocky Hill. She will be missed by many loving nieces, nephews, cousins and her ex-father-in-law Sebastian Fichera of Sicily. She was pre-deceased by brothers Domenico, Gino, and Sebastiano Giuliano; brother-in-law Vito Catalano; sister-in-law Josephine Giuliano, and nephew Santo Giuliano. Her family would like to thank the staff of Hartford Hospital for their kind and loving care. Relatives and friends may gather with Maria's family on Tuesday, March 18, from 4-8 p.m. at the Newington Memorial Funeral Home, 20 Bonair Ave., Newington. Her funeral services will begin on Wednesday morning, March 19, at 9:00 a.m. at Newington Memorial followed by a Mass of Christian Burial at 10:00 a.m. at St. Luke's Church, Hartford.
