John Joseph Rice Jr. Obituary

John Joseph Rice, Jr., 51 passed away on Sunday, March 16, 2014 at his home in West Hartford. Born in Hartford, he was the son of Mary (Seymour) Rice and the late John Joseph Rice, Sr. John served his country honorably in the United States Air Force. He graduated from Central Connecticut State University with a degree in Construction Engineering and thereafter spent his professional career working in the construction industry. Early on in his career, John was involved in constructing the Channel Tunnel (or Chunnel), the rail tunnel under the English Channel that connects England and France. Following this, John worked as an estimator at Stone Construction Company, Inc. in Southbury, and from 1997 through July of 2013 as a sales engineer for Tilcon Connecticut, Inc. An avid Boston Red Sox fan, John loved to golf and play darts, participating in the PDSL (Professional Development Singles League), the Central Connecticut Dart League, the Northern Connecticut Dart League and the New Haven Dart League. John had an infectious laugh, an engaging personality and a quirky, wry sense of humor that captivated all those who had the pleasure of knowing him. But it was his eyes, those big, blue Irish eyes that were always smiling even in the most difficult times, that drew you in and made you want to be a part of his world. John worked tirelessly to provide a happy and full life for his family. A beloved and loving husband and father, and a caring, giving and compassionate son, son-in-law, brother, brother-in-law and uncle, John will be dearly missed by his wife Diane Dalenta-Rice and their daughter Aleksandra of West Hartford; his mother Mary Rice of Newington; his brother J. Thaddeus Rice and his wife Cheryl of West Hartford; his sister Mary Sternberg of Newington; his mother-in-law, Alice Dalenta of Newington, his sisters-in law, Marianne Hawkes and Christine Dalenta, both of Newington, as well as several nieces and nephews. John's family would like to acknowledge and thank all those who helped him in his courageous battle with ALS, especially the ALS clinics at the Hospital For Special Care in New Britain and the VA Hospital in West Haven, VNA Healthcare, Dr. Kevin Felice, Dr. Huned Patwa, Elizabeth Auld, P.A. and Brian Tarleton, Tonetta St. John and Juliette Hutchinson. John's funeral service will begin on Friday, March 21 at 9:00 a.m. at the Newington Memorial Funeral Home, 20 Bonair Ave. in Newington, followed by a Mass of Christian Burial at 10:00 a.m. at the Church of the Holy Spirit in Newington.
