Margaret Utting Obituary

Margaret (Peg) Ryan Utting, 98, died March 23, 2014 in Wethersfield, CT, at the home of her daughter, Ruth. The widow of Charles E. Utting, who died in 2005, Peg was born September 17, 1915 to George Ryan and Elizabeth Phelps Ryan of East Hartford, raised in East Hartford and graduated from East Hartford High School in 1931at age 15. In addition, she spent summers all through her life at Crystal Lake in Ellington, CT, where she met Charlie Utting and later married in 1940; Peg and Charlie moved to Manchester and raised their three daughters. In the 1930s and 40s, Peg worked as a secretary for Aetna Insurance Company, building several friendships that she treasured throughout her life. When her children were of school age, Peg returned to the workforce as a temporary worker for Kelly Services and was employed in a variety of offices, eventually working as a secretary for Pioneer Parachute Company for many years, retiring at age 74. Peg loved to travel, and many of her fondest memories were of road trips across the USA and Canada. She had a deep appreciation for nature and wildlife and was committed to the preservation of the environment and the natural wonders of the world. Peg was a woman of many pursuits: among other interests, she enjoyed playing bridge, singing in the Church choir, serving as president of the PTA, teaching Sunday school, and shopping at flea markets. In her younger years, she played the violin and the ukulele. She was knowledgeable about current events and could carry on a conversation with anyone of any age. She enjoyed genealogy and did a great deal of research into her ancestry. She loved to go to the Goodspeed and the Little Theater of Manchester. For many years, she went to Cardiac Rehab at Manchester Hospital, where she made many friends. Throughout her life, Peg was a wonderful friend to people of all ages and circumstances. She was considered by many to be a role model and was a wonderful listener and sympathizer. Even in her final days, she was more concerned about the well-being of her visitors than herself, which endeared her to everyone. Peg truly lived her life by the Golden Rule. She was loved and respected by all whose lives she touched, from clerks at the Post Office to parking attendants at the Hospital, she was very appreciative of the hard work done by others. She had a great positive attitude and a strong religious faith. Peg is survived by her daughters and their spouses, Elizabeth and David Reynolds, Ruth Utting and Greg Curtin, and Christine Utting, Grandchildren Melanie Sadoski and Benjamin Sadoski, Sara Curtin Mulcahy and Tim Mulcahy, Jamey Curtin and Kailin Curtin, Brian, Jane and Sam Kennedy, and Great Grandchildren Ethan and Gabriel Arakawa, Meghan and Brendan Mulcahy, Finn and Scarlett Curtin. She is also survived by her cousins Robert, William and Donald Butler as well as numerous nieces and nephews and a host of friends. Peg will be greatly missed by all who had the fortune to know her. The family wishes to thank Dr. William Zeidler, Erin and the other nurses, aides and volunteers from Middlesex Hospice Homecare as well as Nema and the other caregivers who have assisted in making our Mom's final months comfortable and happy.
