Timothy Robert Whitehead Obituary

Timothy Robert Whitehead, of West Hartford, CT, beloved husband of Martha Woodworth Whitehead, died March 22, 2014, after a valiant battle against COPD (despite being smoke-free for 26 years) and complications of Parkinson's Disease. Tim was born in Littleborough, England, to Alice (Whittaker) and Anslem Gresford Whitehead, on February 2, 1938. After his service in the Royal Air Force and the Lancashire Constabulary as a "Bobby" in Liverpool, Tim came to the United States in the early 1960s. His ultimate career goal was to become a cowboy. That dream was nearly realized several years later when, for a brief time, Tim drove a milk delivery truck in Florida. A self-made man, Tim was not one to be defined by his work; he found joy throughout his working life, whether wearing a uniform or a three piece suit. Tim had a keen intellect and inquiring nature and never tired of learning. With an infectious laugh, Tim loved life and lived it to the fullest. A music lover, with a "thing" for mezzo sopranos; Tim had abiding appreciation for beauty. He loved good food and single malt scotch, Wendy's Frosties and M&Ms. In addition to Martha, his devoted wife and life partner of 28 years, Tim is survived by his son David Whitehead and his fiancé Mary Mackiewicz of Bristol; daughter Stephanie Lawlor and her husband Robert of North Windham; grandchildren Andrew Whitehead, Deanna Maria Whitehead, Nathan Whitehead, and Skylar Cioffari; brother Stephen Whitehead of Rotherfield, East Sussex, England; several nieces and nephews and countless friends. The family wishes to thank the staff of Avery Heights, Hartford, in particular Cheryl St. John and the staff of Station 1, for treating Tim with the dignity and compassion that allowed him to die as gently and sweetly as he lived. A memorial service and celebration of Tim's life will be held on Sunday April 13, at Bailey Funeral Home, 48 Broad Street, Plainville. Family and friends are invited to gather beginning at 1 p.m. The memorial service will begin promptly at 2 p.m. In lieu of flowers Tim's request was that donations be made to the American Parkinson's Disease Association, Connecticut Chapter, P.O. Box 718, Old Mystic, CT 06372. Also, if you know someone who smokes, in honor of Tim's remarkable life, beg them to quit. For additional information or to leave words of condolence please visit
