Philip S. Hopper Obituary


Philip Simons Hopper, 97, of Manchester died peacefully on Friday (April 11, 2014) at Woodlake at Tolland Nursing and Rehabilitation Center after a short illness. Born in Elmira, NY on February 27, 1917, son of the late Lawrence L. and Grace (Simons) Hopper, he had been a resident of Manchester since 1942. For 64 years he was the beloved husband of Margery Foster Hopper, who predeceased him in 2005. He was also predeceased by his sister, Ruth Hopper Rand. Phil graduated from Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute in 1940 with a B. S. Degree in Mechanical Engineering. He moved to Hartford, CT in 1940 after joining Pratt & Whitney Aircraft and retired from P&WA in 1984. During his distinguished 44 year career, he was awarded 10 patents for his reciprocating and jet engine design work. In 1954 he received a M. S. Degree in Mechanical Engineering from UConn. Phil was an avid sportsman and hunter. He was a registered Maine hunting guide, winner of numerous sailing championships at Columbia Lake and medalist in local, national and world skeet shooting competitions. His hobbies included photography, carpentry, fishing, and raising hunting dogs. He was an accomplished gunsmith, a member of The Rockville Fish & Game Club and The South Windsor Landowners Protective Association. Phil and Margery created many special memories with family and friends at their Woodland Terrace cottage on Columbia Lake. Phil is survived by three sons, Barry R. Hopper and his wife, Judith, of Natchez, MS; Bruce L. Hopper and his wife, Linda, of San Rafael, CA; Philip L. Hopper of San Antonio, TX, along with six grandchildren and five great-grandchildren. The family expresses their sincere appreciation for the kind and compassionate care provided by the staffs of White Oaks Community and Woodlake at Tolland. Services are private.
