Julio Nunes Coelho Obituary

Julio Nunes Coelho, M.D., 90, of Somers, CT passed away peacefully at Evergreen Healthcare Center on April 20, 2014. He was the beloved husband of Karin Coelho for more than 58 years. Born March 12, 1924 in Lisbon, Portugal, to the late Jose and Maria Coelho. Julio was an extremely dedicated family practitioner and skilled general surgeon serving in the Enfield, CT and Hartford, CT area for over 40 years. He was well known throughout the medical community as a respected and compassionate doctor who worked tirelessly for his patients. Julio was raised in Lisbon, Portugal. He served as a medical officer in the Portuguese Army and he received his medical degree in 1949 from the University of Lisbon, Portugal. In 1952 he traveled on the maiden voyage of the S. S. Independence to the United States where he did a year of residency at New York City Hospital, received his post graduate degree at Columbia Presbyterian Medical Center, Columbia University and was an emergency room senior resident at St. John's Episcopal Hospital in Brooklyn, N.Y. In 1955 he married his lovely wife Karin. Shortly thereafter he took a position as a thoracic surgeon at Hazelwood State Hospital in Louisville, Kentucky. While in Kentucky they had three sons. In 1961 the Coelho family moved to Connecticut where Julio practiced at New York City Hospital, N.Y. and St Francis Hospital in Hartford. Julio continued to pursue his long medical career as a physician and surgeon, opening offices in Hartford, Enfield and Stafford Springs, CT. In 1980 he opened the Enfield Medical Center, which housed the Enfield Ambulatory Care Center, the first private facility of its type in the state. Julio was also a trusted and valued practitioner and surgeon at Johnson Memorial Hospital, Hartford Hospital and Rockville Hospital. Julio proudly served In the United Stated Army Reserve as a Lieutenant Colonel, Medical Corps. He retired in 1967. A devoted husband and father, Julio loved having his whole family together including the family's many pets over the years - multiple cats and two Great Danes, Charlie and Miguel. Julio was drawn to the sea and sun. He had a great love of the ocean and all things nautical, keeping to his Portuguese roots. When not practicing medicine he spent his free time swimming, beach combing, and looking out over the waters from his Block Island and Marco Island homes. Julio had a kind and loving respect for all living things, and was an avid bird watcher. His great passion was for sharing and preparing Portuguese food and wine with his friends and family. His specialty, Portuguese style bouillabaisse, became is a Coelho Family Christmas Eve tradition. Julio leaves three sons. Rui and his wife Julia, and their sons Jackson, Alexander and Luke of Belmont, MA, John, of Marblehead, MA and Kenneth and his wife Sara and their sons Erik and Russell of Somers. His family will receive relatives and friends at Leete-Stevens Enfield Chapels, 61 South Road, Enfield on Thursday, April 24 from 4 to 7 p.m. A funeral service will be held on Friday April 25 at 11:30 a.m. at the funeral home. Burial will be private at West Cemetery, Somers.
