Calvin C. Russell Jr. Obituary

Calvin C. "Buddy" Russell, Jr. passed away peacefully on April 19, 2014 at home. He was the husband of the late Barbara D. Russell, whom he married in 1942. Buddy was born on December 3, 1920 at Fort Adams in Newport. Rhode Island, the son of the late Calvin and Irene Russell. After graduating from Rogers High School in Newport, he served as a proud WWII Army Air Corps veteran in the Pacific with the 550th P-61 Night Fighter Squadron. Returning home after the war, he and his brother Irving worked at Russell's Market, the family store. During these years he attended the Allen School of Aeronautics where he became certified as a Master aircraft mechanic. Buddy moved from Newport to Manchester, CT in 1950 to take a position at Pratt & Whitney Aircraft in its Experimental Test Division, until he retired in 1982. He loved planes, having his pilot's license and telling stories about his flying adventures. Following his retirement, he turned his passion for golf into a second career by working part time managing the Red Rock Golf Course in Manchester and later Grassmere Country Club. For seventeen years he shared companionship, jokes and golf. In their spare time Buddy and Barbara, his wife of 69 years, enjoyed driving new routes on country roads throughout New England. They loved to say they took drives wherever the road would take them with the anticipation of new discoveries. Buddy's woodworking creativity knew no boundaries. He loved spending time in his workshop and crafted truly extraordinary pieces, including birdhouses, dollhouses for his granddaughters and various types of furniture. He will be remembered for his creativity, inventiveness, his willingness to help anyone in need, his story telling and the twinkle in his eyes. Buddy leaves his daughter Mary Lynn and husband Ralph Rooke of Old Saybrook, his son Bart and wife Rorie Russell of Bloomfield, six grandchildren, five great-grandchildren and several nieces and nephews. He also leaves his sisters, June Harrington, Nancy Lee and his sister-in-law Dottie Russell. He was predeceased by his brother, Irving Russell and his sister Barbara Quinn. Buddy's family would like to express their gratitude to his caregivers, Sheryl, Jackie, Veronica, Joan and Richard. The respect, love and care they gave him is greatly appreciated. Donations in his memory may be made to the Fort Adams Trust, 90 Fort Adams Dr., Fort Adams State Park, Newport, RI 02840. Family and friends are invited to attend a memorial service at The Ahern Funeral Home, 111 Main St, Rte. 4, Unionville, CT on Saturday, April 26, 2014 at 11:00 am.
