Francis E. Macchi Obituary

Francis (Fran) Emil Macchi, beloved husband of Marguerite (Peg Arnold) Macchi passed away peacefully on Tuesday, April 22, 2014 at Hartford Hospital. Fran was born at Hartford Hospital in Hartford Ct. on November 9, 1939, and was the son of the late Frank and Jeannette (Cipolla) Macchi. He was a lifelong resident of East Hartford and graduated from St. Mary's School in 1954, East Hartford High School in 1957 and received his B.A. degree from Providence College in 1961. Following graduation he served in the Air National Guard. He retired from Pratt and Whitney in 2008 after 46 years of service in the purchasing department where he was affectionately known as "The Godfather of Parts." From early childhood until middle age, he participated in a variety of sports on many levels, especially baseball, basketball, softball and "the Sport of Kings" where, in his own words, "I made hundreds of friends and thousands of memories." Fran firmly believed that you can assess a man by his friends, and by that measure his legacy was unparalleled. He continually nurtured all of his friendships whether from school, work or play. He made a profound impact on so many people and most of them have at least one funny story to relate from their time with him. Fran is survived by his loving children, Michael Macchi and his wife Claire of Bethel, Anthony Macchi and his wife Kristin of Boston; Jennifer Macchi Lamantini of Glastonbury; and Edward (Ted) Macchi of East Hartford; six treasured grandchildren, Ashley and Peter Turner; Victoria and Sophia Macchi; and James and Johnny Macchi. He is also survived by his former son-in-law Steve Lamantini, his brother-in-law Edward Arnold and his wife Anne and sister-in laws Dorothy Macchi, Ann Arnold, Diane Arnold and Carmela Arnold; Uncle Sam Cipolla and wife Joan; Aunt Winifred Terragna and many beloved nephews, nieces, cousins and friends. He was predeceased by his brother Joseph Macchi, brothers-in-law William, Richard and James Arnold and sister-in-law Jean Turning and Carol Merrick. A Mass of Christian Burial will be held on Monday April 28th, at 10:30 am at Our Lady of Peace Church, 370 May Road, East Hartford. Everyone is asked to go directly to the church on Monday morning. Burial will follow at St. Mary's Cemetery, Burnside Avenue, East Hartford. Family and friends may call at the D'Esopo-East Hartford Memorial Chapel, 30 Carter Street, East Hartford on Sunday April 27th, from 2-6 pm. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be sent to The Helen and Harry Grey Cancer Center, Hartford Hospital, Fund Dev. Office, 80 Seymour Street, Hartford CT 06102; or Visiting Nurses and Health Services of CT, 8 Keynote Drive, Vernon, CT 06066; or the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society, 372 Danbury Road, Suite 200, Wilton, CT 06897. The Macchi family sincerely thanks the medical personnel who have cared for Fran with kindness and compassion during the past ten years.
