Jennie A. Rickert Obituary

Jennie A. Rickert, of Windsor, passed away at Maplewood Senior Living in Danbury, on Monday, May 5, 2014. Born June 17, 1926 to Frank and Katie Petrillo of Waterbury, Jennie attended the Duggan School, graduating as valedictorian. She then attended Waterbury Catholic High School, graduating with high honors at the age of seventeen. She was immediately admitted into an accelerated three year pharmacy program at the University of Connecticut School of Pharmacy, then located in New Haven. After graduation, Jennie worked as the first pharmacist at Manchester Hospital, in Connecticut where she met her future husband William E. Rickert. Jennie and Bill were married November 24, 1951 and soon after started a family, first living in Vernon and then settling in Windsor, where they lived for the next 59 years. Jennie continued her career as a pharmacist throughout her life; first part time while the children grew up and then full time. Her last position was with AARP. Even after her retirement she worked part time just to stay involved in the field. An active woman, Jennie loved to garden and cook. She was also an accomplished seamstress and cake decorator. She played violin in high school and later learned to play the organ. She was active in a "sewing club" club with friends from Manchester and visited her family from Waterbury nearly every weekend. She and her husband were devout Catholics and were actively involved in their local church, St. Gertrude. In the later years Jennie and Bill enjoyed traveling and visiting their children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren. They celebrated their 60th anniversary the year before Bill passed away, on May 8, 2012. At this time, Jennie's health began to decline. Not able to live independently, she sold her house in Windsor and moved to Seabury Assisted Living in Bloomfield and more recently to Maplewood Senior Living in Danbury. Jennie is survived by her three children, Joan of Kent, NY, Mark of Green Cove Springs, FL, Paul of Rindge, NH; six grandchildren and two great-grandchildren. Her spirit, hospitality, and love will be missed by all of her family and friends. Funeral services will begin from Carmon Funeral Home, 807 Bloomfield Ave, Windsor on Friday, May 9, 2014 at 9 a.m. to be followed by a Mass of Christian Burial beginning at 10 a.m. in St. Gertrude Church, 550 Matianuck Ave., Windsor. Friends may also gather directly at St. Gertrude Church at 10 a.m. on Friday. Burial will follow in Windsor Veterans Memorial Cemetery. The family will receive friends on Thursday, May 8th from 5-8 at Carmon Funeral Home. Donations, in Jennie's memory, may be made to St. Gertrude Church, 550 Matianuck Ave., Windsor, CT 06095.
