Gladys A. McLain Obituary


Gladys A. (Lewis) McLain, 91 of Manchester, beloved wife of 69 years to Reverend Neale O. McLain passed away peacefully Saturday, May 3, 2014 at Vernon Manor. Gladys was born in Endicott, NY on November 16, 1922, daughter of the late Earl F. and Ermina (Carrington) Lewis. She joined the Church of the Nazarene in 1939 and following her marriage was assigned with her husband to several churches, in St. Albans, VT, Fairfield, ME, Cambridge, MA, Dover, NJ and Manchester, CT. In her first church, all of the members of her Junior Sunday School Class eventually attended college and while in Manchester she was recognized as a fine Bible teacher. Gladys and Rev. McLain resided in Manchester for more than 30 years, and while serving at the Church of the Nazarene in Manchester from 1975-1984, Gladys founded the Cornerstone Christian School in 1981. She was a Bible teacher at the church and a writer of devotional and history books of Cornerstone Christian School. Gladys was a longtime volunteer and active member of Church of the Nazarene in Manchester. In addition to her husband, Gladys is survived by two sons, Reverend Kevin N. McLain and his wife, Robin, and Martin G. McLain and his wife, Linda, a sister, Rosemary G. Lewis, six grandchildren and five great-grandchildren, two brothers-in-law, Gerald McLain and his wife, Susan and their son, Skip; Alan McLain and his wife, Lucille and Alan's children, Nora and Monika; a sister-in-law, Anne McLain and sons, John and James. Besides her parents she was predeceased by three brothers, a sister and a brother-in-law, Col. Roy W. McLain, who proudly served his country during WWII, Korean War and Vietnam War. A Memorial Service will be Saturday, May 17, 2014 at 3 pm at Church of the Nazarene 218 Main Street Manchester. A memorial calling hour will be prior to the service from 2-3 pm at the church. Private burial will be in Riverside Cemetery, Endicott, NY. Memorial contributions may be made to Cornerstone Christian School 236 Main Street Manchester, CT 06042.
