Donald W. Matthews Obituary

Donald W. Matthews, 92, of Vernon, and former longtime resident of Enfield, husband for 60 years of the late Jean C. (Burrill) Matthews, died peacefully on Tuesday (May 13, 2014). Born in Claremont, NH on July 13, 1921, Don was the son of the late Ora W. Matthews and Elsie M. (Shute) Matthews. He was raised in Greenfield, MA and lived in Enfield for 47 years. A U.S. Army Veteran of World War II, he enlisted shortly after graduating from Greenfield High School, and was stationed in Germany and England with the 3275th Signal Corps. He retired in 1983 after 27 years from Pratt & Whitney Aircraft. He was a member of Elks Lodge #2222. Don had a winning smile, a charming personality, and made friends easily. He enjoyed good food, camping and traveling, and could always be relied on for a good joke or two. His greatest joy was spending time with his family. A loving father, grandfather, and great grandfather, he leaves his children, Sheila Manke and her husband, Robert of Wakefield, RI and Janice Albetski and her husband, Eric of Broad Brook; four grandchildren, Jacob Manke and his fiancé Jennifer, David Manke, Rev. Rachel Manke and Brendan Albetski; two great grandchildren, Leah and Matthew Manke; a special cousin Roland Shute; a niece and three nephews. He was predeceased by his brother, Norman Matthews. A graveside service will be held on Monday, May 19 at 2 p.m. at Hazardville Cemetery, Elm St., Enfield, with Rev. Rachel Manke officiating. Military Honors will be accorded. There are no calling hours before the service. Following the service, the family will receive friends and family at the residence of Eric and Jan Albetski until 6 p.m. to remember Don and celebrate his life. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to Enfield Food Shelf, 96 Alden Avenue, Enfield, CT 06082. Leete-Stevens Enfield Chapels has care of arrangements.
