1932 - 2014 Obituary Condolences
Roger Rubinow Obituary

It is with great sadness that we announce the sudden passing of Roger "Sonny Rogers" Rubinow on Friday May 16, 2014 at St. Francis Hospital. Roger was born in Boston, MA, in 1932, the son of the late Edward and Faye Rubinow, and was a veteran of the Korean War, serving with the US Navy and recently serving as the Commander of the Jewish War Veterans #51. He grew up in New Britain, graduated from New Britain High School and attended the Hartt School of Music. Roger was a member of the Middletown Symphonic Band, the Hartford Musicians Union and the Middletown Commission of the Arts. Roger also coached several seasons for the Bloomfield and New Britain High School football teams. Roger's passions in life were his love of family, gift of music, joy of cooking and making and maintaining countless friendships. He traveled across the United States and Puerto Rico with his band, "The Jolly Gents," and spread his soulful drumming and percussion talent to audiences far and wide. Of course his number 1 fan was his wife, Betty, "his Becky" who stood by his side, raised the children and managed the household no matter what or how far away he was. When Sonny wasn't playing music and working several jobs to support his family he could be found cooking in the kitchen, and he honed his skills at 90 Annette Place where his 6 children were the lucky recipients of all his creations. The love of food led him to open up Ruby's Eatery which he operated for over 22 years aided by his partner and son, Russell, his wife Betty along with every single member of the family. After the closing of Ruby's, Sonny's never-ending drive and work ethic propelled him to his daughter Paula's side at her ice cream shop, Main Street Creamery, in Old Wethersfield, where he continued to wow folks with not only his famous corned beef but his contagious laughter, wit, charm and beautiful smile. In addition to Betty, his devoted wife of 57 years, he is survived by his six children, daughter Susan Michel and her husband Brian, of Middletown, and their children, Drs. Eric and Shannon Michel, of Norfolk, VA, Christopher Michel of Washington, DC and Carly Michel of Meriden, daughter Laurie Rubinow and her son, Max Rubinow Gill of Chester, son Russell Rubinow and his wife Kelly and their daughter Natalie of Middletown, daughter Paula Faye Rubinow, of Old Wethersfield, son Howard Rubinow of Old Wethersfield, and son Scott Rubinow and his wife Paula McHale, of Middletown; sister Rochelle Asfalg and her husband George of Cromwell, brothers-in-law, Ted Heller and his wife Anne of Middletown, and Frank Katz and his wife Mary of Huntersville, NC; also several nieces and nephews, and countless friends and fellow musicians. Funeral services will be held Wednesday (May 21st) at 11 a.m. at Biega Funeral Home, 3 Silver St., Middletown. Burial with military honors will be in the State Veterans Cemetery, Middletown. Friends may call at Biega Funeral Home Wednesday from 9 to 10:30 a.m. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Jewish War Veterans at JWV, c/o Norman Hanenbaum, P.O.
