Paul A. Herman DDS Obituary

Paul A. Herman, 95, of West Hartford, beloved husband for 69 years to Vivian (Hudson) Herman, and a noted Oral Maxillofacial Surgeon, passed away Thursday, May 22, 2014. A lifelong Hartford area resident, he was raised in Hartford and graduated from Weaver High School. He received his BA from Drake University, Des Moines, IA and his DDS from the University of Maryland. Dr. Herman served in the US Navy as an oral surgeon for four years and was particularly proud he trained with the famous "Carson Raiders" in Gulfport, MS. He also received his advanced degree from the University of Michigan in Oral Maxillofacial Surgery and took additional training in Anesthesiology in Akron, OH before returning to Hartford and establishing his practice at 242 Trumbull Street. He practiced in Hartford for 39 years, retiring in 1990. He was past president of the Alpha Omega Dental Society and was past Secretary of the former Mount Sinai Hospital, Hartford. An avid golfer, he was a former member of Cliffside Country Club and Hopmeadow Country Club, Simsbury. Dr. Herman along with his wife Vivian, bred and raised German Shepherds, with the goal to further the breed. Besides his wife of 69 years he leaves a son Terence Spencer Herman, MD and his wife Tania Herman, PhD of Edmond, OK; a daughter Dawn E. Herman, APRN,BC of Norfolk, MA; three grandchildren Erica Saunders and her husband Neil, Kyle S. Herman and his wife Melissa, and Daniela Herman; four great grandchildren Elias, Owen, and Mateo Saunders and River Herman; a sister-in-law Alice K. Potter of Naples, FL; and two nephews Walter Brown Potter, Jr. and Robert McClain Potter. At Dr. Herman's request, no public services will be held. Because of his love for German Shepherds, contributions may be made to FIDELO, Guide Dog Foundation, 103 Old Iron Ore Road, Bloomfield, CT 06001.
