Edgar B. French Obituary


Edgar B. French, 89, husband of the late Sofia (Recato) French died Friday, May, 30, 2014 at his home. He was born in New York City, son of the late Buell A. and Mary Etta (Haggerty) French and lived in Hartford all of his life. He was a graduate of Hartford Public High School before entering the U.S. Navy with Active Service from 1943 to 1946, honored with 1. American Area Campaign Ribbon, 2. Asiatic-Pacific Campaign Ribbon, 3. World War II (Victory Medal). He was a graduate of FEATI University in Manila, Philippines for Aeronautical Engineering. He lived in the Philippines where he met his wife and four of his eight children were born. Upon returning to the U.S. in 1951 he worked for United Aircraft, the City of Hartford Assessor's Office, and The State of Connecticut D.O.T. He later founded the French Appraisal Company with designations to American Institute Real Estate Appraisers, International Association of Assessing Officers, American Right of Way Association, and Greater Hartford Board of Realtors. Edgar was a leader of community development in the City of Hartford which led to the establishment of Community Health Services, and the ONE CHANE neighborhood organization. He received several meritorious awards for outstanding services acknowledging his contributions to the revitalization of Hartford and its neighborhoods. Edgar was a Dixieland jazz trombonist leading The Port Pleasant Jazz Band for more than fifty years. He performed with world renowned jazz musicians whom he remained friends with throughout his entire life. He was a catalyst and facilitator for music and art education in local schools. Edgar is survived by three sons Paul A. French and his fiancée Theodora of Enfield. Harold T. French of Hartford, and Joseph A. French and wife Daravahn of North Carolina, his two daughters, Sarah J. French of New York, and Marietta W. French of New York, his daughter in-law Barbara French of West Hartford, a sister Barbara Lee of Harwich Port, MA, a host of grandchildren, great grandchildren, and great-great grandchildren, and several nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by three sons Buell, Edward and Clifton French. A private Memorial service will be held at Center Church, Hartford at the convenience of the family, where military honors will be accorded him. Burial will be private at the convenience of the family. Visiting hours will be Wednesday, June 4th, 6-8 pm at the Dillon-Baxter Funeral Home, 1276 Berlin Tpke. Wethersfield.
