William T. Doherty Jr. Obituary


William T. Doherty, Jr., 87, of Bloomfield, passed away on Wednesday, June 4, 2014 at Jerome Home in New Britain. He was born on May 8, 1927 in Brockton, MA, the son of the late William T. and Grace M. (Sullivan) Doherty. He was the beloved husband of the late Rita Doherty, who predeceased him in 2005. Bill graduated from Brockton High School, class of 1945, after which he studied engineering at the United States Merchant Marine Academy in Kings Point, NY (1945-48). He served as a U.S. Merchant Marine and was a World War II veteran. After receiving an Honorable Discharge, Bill moved to Hartford to work as a Power Plant Operator for Pratt & Whitney in East Hartford (1954-1960). Next Bill accepted a job at Saint Francis Hospital & Medical Center in Hartford as an Assistant Plant Superintendent. Over the next 32 years, Bill was promoted to Plant Superintendent and ultimately Vice President-Plant Operations & Construction. During this time Bill was responsible for overseeing the construction of the McGovern Wing, reconstruction of the former Bond Hotel, pathology laboratories & critical care units; renovation & expansion of the Department of Emergency Medicine and the installation of CT scanning & magnetic resonance equipment. Throughout his career, he was active in the following organizations: New England & CT Health Engineer Societies (charter member and past President), American Society of Healthcare Engineering, St. Francis Hospital-Buildings & Grounds Committee and American Merchant Marine Veterans. Upon retiring in 1992, Bill and his wife Rita traveled throughout the continental U.S., Alaska, Hawaii as well as Canada, Ireland, Spain, Italy, Morocco, Russia, Estonia, Norway, Denmark and the Netherlands. He enjoyed spending time with his family and was an avid Red Sox, Patriots and UCONN Huskies fan. He was a voracious reader and was always ready to debate political and economic matters. Besides his parents and wife, Bill was predeceased by his brother, Paul F. Doherty. Bill is survived by his five daughters and sons-in-law, Maureen & Steven Dardinski of Westford, MA, Sheila & Mark Austin of Wethersfield, Susan & Dr. Charles Peloquin of Gainesville, FL, Kathleen and Gary Larkins of Darien and Marianne & Glen Baskin of Ellington; nine grandchildren, Dr. Christopher & Alycia Peloquin, Dr. Danielle & Emily Austin, Casey & Melanie Larkins, Zachary & Joshua Baskin and Alexander Dardinski; two granddogs, Silver & Max; three nephews, James, Stephen and Paul Doherty as well as many nieces, nephews and cousins, including Mary Hartin of Rockland, MA and Dorothy Burke of Framingham, MA. Family and friends may gather on Monday, June 9, 9:15 a.m. at the Carmon Windsor Funeral Home, 807 Bloomfield Ave., Windsor, followed by a Mass of Christian Burial, 10 a.m. at St. Gertrude Church, Windsor. Burial with military honors will follow in Mount St. Benedict Cemetery, Bloomfield. His family will receive friends on Sunday, June 8, from 3-6 p.m. at the funeral home. The family wishes to thank the medical and support staff at Jerome Home for their exemplary and compassionate care during Bill's time there.
