Joseph P. Gionfriddo Obituary


Joseph P. Gionfriddo, 88, of Newington, beloved and devoted husband of Yolande (Ruest) Gionfriddo for 54 years, died peacefully Tuesday, June 10, 2014 at Hartford Hospital with his family by his side. Born on November 11, 1925 in Hartford and living in the Front Street area, he was the son of the late Aurelio and Concetta Gionfriddo. Joe served proudly in the U.S. Navy during WWII aboard the USS Golden City, the USS LST 873 and the USS LST 835 in Iwo Jima, Leytte Gulf and Okinawa. He was employed by the Town of West Hartford for over 30 years. He loved music and was an avid drummer, playing in many bands, starting with the St. Augustine's Boys Brigade Band. Joe enjoyed all sports, especially the New York Yankees, UCONN men's and women's basketball and the New York Giants. He will be sadly missed by his family and many friends. Besides his wife, he is survived by his children, Carla M. Gionfriddo and partner Eric J. Lawhorn, David J. and wife Nancy C. Gionfriddo, Michael A. and wife Tracy R. Gionfriddo, Gregory P. and wife Renee C. Gionfriddo; brothers, Angelo Gionfriddo, Orlando Gionfriddo and wife Kaye; sisters-in-law, Ann Gionfriddo and Marie Gionfriddo; seven adored grandchildren, Chelsea V. Gionfriddo, Gregory P. Gionfriddo, II, Danielle J. Gionfriddo, Dana M. Gionfriddo, Gabrielle N. Gionfriddo, Michael A. Gionfriddo, II and Adam D. Gionfriddo; brothers-in-law and sisters-in-law, Normand and Edna Ruest, Robert and Joan Ruest, Martin and Dot Ruest, as well as many nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by a son, Mark Gionfriddo; brothers, Sergio and wife Mary, Paul Gionfriddo, Salvatore Gionfriddo, Dante Gionfriddo, John Gionfriddo and wife Barbara; sisters, Lucy and husband Frank Sinaguglia, Mary and husband Mario Latina and sister-in-law, Carolyn-Jean Gionfriddo. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Saturday at 10 a.m. at Holy Spirit Church, 183 Church St., Newington. Everyone is asked to please go directly to the church. The burial will be in Mt. St. Benedict Cemetery, Bloomfield with full military honors. Calling hours are Friday from 4-7 p.m. at the D'Esopo Funeral Chapel, 277 Folly Brook Blvd., Wethersfield.
