Lois Elaine Neumann Obituary

Lois Elaine (Hansen) Neumann, 57, of Granby, beloved wife for 24 years of Kurt and loving and proud mother of Carly and Amy, passed away on Saturday, June 14, 2014 at Hartford Hospital. Born in Hartford on March 7, 1957, Lois was raised in Granby and Canton. She graduated from Canton High School in 1975. A champion of education and learning, Lois's lifelong pursuit of knowledge included a Bachelor's degree from the University of Connecticut in 1979, a Master's degree in Consumer Economics from Cornell University in 1982, teaching certification, and the pursuit of a second Master's degree from the University of New England. Lois taught Family and Consumer Sciences at Bloomfield High School for the past 11 years. She loved her students and supported them in every way she could. She was a tireless mentor, advocate and support network for her students, co-workers, family, friends and all who knew her. She excelled at everything she put her mind and hands to: cooking, sewing, reading, etc. She had an insatiable curiosity about the world and was an expert at facts and trivia alike. Lois's quick wit and sense of humor, willingness to help, and love of life made her the friend everyone should have. An accomplished quilter since college, Lois joyfully shared her passion and talent for quilting by teaching quilting classes and making and giving quilts. Whether donating quilts, participating in community events, supporting local committees, involving her students in volunteer service activities or sewing banners for the local church, Lois was an involved member of her community. She was always willing to lend a helping hand and was at her best when she was helping others. Most of all, Lois will be remembered as a loving wife and mother whose central focus and pride and joy were her two daughters. Besides her husband of 24 years, Kurt, she leaves two daughters, Carly Elizabeth of Cuba, NY and Amy Grace of Granby; her father, Frederick P. Hansen of Middle Haddam; a sister, Meg Cooley and her husband Ken of Farmington; a nephew, Ben Cooley of Farmington; two nieces, Sara Eggers and her husband Gary of Kansas City, MO and Jennifer Zanelli and her husband Troy of Meridian, ID; a special aunt whom she was named after, Lois Longley of Granby; a cousin Ed Longley and his family of Granby; many great nieces and nephews and a myriad of family and friends near and far. Her family will receive friends on Saturday, June 21, 3-7 p.m., at the Hayes-Huling & Carmon Funeral Home, 364 Salmon Brook Street, Granby. A memorial service will be held on Sunday, June 22, 2 p.m. at the First Congregational Church of Granby, 219 North Granby Road, Granby. Burial will be private in Granby Cemetery. Lois's family has requested that memorial donations be made to Connecticut Children's Medical Center, 282 Washington St., Hartford, CT 06106 or by visiting, www.connecticutchildrensfoundation.org or to St. Francis Foundation, Attn: NICU, 95 Woodland St., Hartford, CT 06105 or by visiting, www.saintfrancisdonor.com.
