John "Jack" Swayner Obituary

John "Jack" Swayner, 58, of Ellington passed away on Thursday, July 3, after a two-year battle with lung cancer. Born in Hartford on July 6, 1955 to the late John and Elizabeth (Dudych) Swayner, Jack was raised in Glastonbury. Graduating from Glastonbury High School, playing baseball and football for the Tomahawks, Jack then graduated from the Pratt & Whitney trade school and worked at Pratt as a tool, dye and gauge maker for 19 years Afterward, becoming the owner and proprietor of O.F. Stengelin Cutlery in Hartford until 2012. Jack is survived by his wife, Jeanne (Provera) of 33 years, their two sons, John of Vernon, and Matt of Ellington; and his sister, Deborah McCormick, and her husband Michael of St. Augustine, Florida. Jack was an outdoorsman who enjoyed gardening, ice fishing and camping. He also was passionate about woodworking and knife sharpening. He was an avid Pittsburgh Steelers fan, taking a much-desired trip to Pittsburgh with his family last fall to see a game. A Memorial Service will be held at the Rose Hill Funeral Home 580 Elm Street in Rocky Hill on Friday July 11, at 11:30 a.m. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Masonicare Partners Home Health and Hospice, 111 Founders Plaza, East Hartford, CT.
