Arthur Pelkey Obituary

Arthur Pelkey, 91, of East Hartford, passed away peacefully Wednesday, July 9, 2014 at Manchester Manor. Born May 1, 1923 in Pawtucket, RI, he was a son to the late Arthur and Lillian (Houston) Pelkey. He was a veteran of WWII serving his country proudly with the U.S. Air Force, and was employed as a technician with Pratt & Whitney until his retirement. He shared an extraordinary life with his late wife Kathryn (Grimley), and loved spending time with family. Some of his most precious moments were camping with his family at Hammonasset Beach, and hosting numerous 4th of July celebrations at their home. He was an avid sailor, and enjoyed countless hours on his boat. Another passion of Art's was woodworking, in which he had crafted 212 rocking horses that were gifted over the years. He will always be remembered for his wonderful sense of humor. He is survived by his daughters Mary Ellen Ellsworth and her husband, Bruce of South Windsor, and Maureen Ahlborn and her husband, Richard of Pittsburgh, PA; grandson Arthur D. Pelkey; brother Jack Pelkey of North Carolina; and numerous other family and friends, especially his roommate Chief Stronghorse and his daughter Joy. In addition to his parents and wife, he was predeceased by his son Arthur Steven Pelkey. Arthur's family would like to extend a special thank you to the staff at Manchester Manor and Immanuel House for the sincere care and compassion given to him. Calling hours for Arthur will be held from 4-7pm on Monday, July 14, 2014 at Samsel & Carmon Funeral Home, 419 Buckland Rd., South Windsor, where there will be a funeral service with military honors beginning at 7pm. A private interment will be held at the convenience of the family. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Beacon Hospice, 111 Founders Plaza, 1st Fl. #102, East Hartford, CT 06108.
