Richard D. Fairchild Obituary

Richard Deane Fairchild, 67, of Southington, passed away on July 8, 2014, surrounded by his loving family, after a courageous battle with cancer. The world lost a great man with a huge heart, a fantastic sense of humor & the uncanny ability to make instant friends anywhere. Richard was born in Framingham, MA on August 9, 1946. He graduated from Newington High School in 1965 & received his B.S. in Education & Masters of Science at the University of Hartford. Richard worked for 34 years as a High School Science Teacher at Hartford Public High School. He was instrumental in the creation of the Operation Excel Program; an incentive program designed to boost students' attendance, grades & school spirit. He also excelled as the Drama Director at HPHS and loved that he could incorporate his love for acting into his teaching curriculum everyday. He was a passionate reader of history and loved spending time with his dogs Jed & Bailey; he enjoyed hiking & camping and possessed a true love of Nature, which he instilled in his children. After his retirement he worked for New Opportunities Elder Services in Waterbury, where he continued to bring smiles to the faces of many with his wit & positive spirit. Richard is survived by his beloved wife and best friend Judith (King) Fairchild & son Eric Fairchild of East Longmeadow, MA & wife Karen Southerland Fairchild, his beloved grandchildren Braden and Olivia; daughter Amy Fairchild Amberger & husband Jonas Zev Amberger of Eliot, ME; his two sisters Nancy Fairchild of Westbrook & Diane Volz, her husband Gary & son Deane of Old Saybrook & his nephews Matthew & Michael Lavoie & wife Anna. He leaves his wife's children Patrick & Karen King of Wolcott & his grandchildren, Connor, Griffin & Ansley. He is also survived by Marabeth Grogan, the mother of their two children Eric and Amy. Richard is preceded in death by his parents, Walter Deane Fairchild and Evelyn Burke Fairchild of Newington; his sister Lynn Fairchild & Judy's son, Sean King. Thank you for the tremendous outpouring of support and love during this sad time. We lost a great man, but his spirit lives on in everyone who had the honor to know him.
